Hi everyone. I gained the tech cert level 2 in July. Now wondering how to gain the work experience towards my nvq.

I'm 30 yo and need to get on with the career but seem to be stumped about how to get a plumber or plumbing company to take me on. I've applied to hundreds of places and dropped cv's off. Both bigger companies and one man bands seem reluctant to take on an apprentice. I'm left wondering if its my age or whether the job market is just stuck in reverse.

I've been referred by the jobcentre to 'next step' and the careers advice service. My cv i'm told is 'perfect' (as one of the companies told me as feedback) and in all cases where it was given the feedback was great. I fear all the careers advice service will do is tell me about cvs and searching the net for jobs. This isn't something i need to learn about.

Any advice or tips would be greatly received.

I'm afraid it's the real world. You can't get experience without a job and you can't get a job without experience. The government in it's wisdom think that training is the answer, but as so many have found out, it's not. It's the same old thing - it's who you know, not what you know. My kick start was from 3 or 4 people who I knew and they were trusting and willing to give me big jobs.

However you go, good luck. It's difficult but when you get that breakthrough, you'll wonder what all the worry was about.

Hi, I’m Derya, I work at the communications agencyrepresenting the Careers Advice Service. I’m sorry you’re finding it really tough finding a placement but perhaps the Careers Advice Service can help with other areas of your job search, in addition to CV advice or searching for jobs online. Our expert advisers can help develop a personal action plan, give you advice on interview techniques or put you in contact with Sector Skills Councils relevant to your profession. Help is available online at www.direct.gov.uk/careersadvice or on 0800 100 900 from 8am to 10pm seven days a week.Perhaps you will find our forums helpful also: https://forums.careers-advice.org/index.php. We also offer a call-back service, where you can book a slot with an adviser at a suitable time for you. Good luck.
