Did you still get as a reliable reading on a fga when inserting it in to the flue from externally as no sample points present on the boiler? I see in the viper book it says to insert 200mm. I remember doing it at college on a balanced flue boiler. Yet to have to do it in the field as to speak yet. Thanks for an input.
 
Simple answer is Yes , on older boilers they didn't fit sampling points as using a Fga wasn't required we used to do other checks and that worked fine for years using Fga only took off with the introduction of condensing boilers in the domestic market

would you guys recommend any good books to learn more about the older boilers? or is it just a case of finding manuals and following their service procedures?
 
No there isn't you could try the mr combi book

Either way you should follow manufacturer instructions for servicing etc
