hi guys when u go out servicing dfe or inset gas fires especially when u have to place the coals a certain way would you service or not if you didnt have manufacturers instructions at hand. im using gotoplumbing website but im not sure if they would have all the service manuals. do u guys use this website or do u know of a more comprehensive website/etc especially for gas fires. starting to get more work on the servicing side so dont want to be turning down jobs or letting the customer down and having to come back etc. thanks in advance.

I've seen it posted a few times on the forum I think it was gasman who first posted it

I take a photo and put back the way I found if the fire only has a few coals, if its got loads and they look wrong to start with I won't touch without the MI's. Luckily most people tend to have the MI's for their fires round here. I have only had to walk away from a handful, but I will do a smoke test and AR the fire if the it passes the flue flow/spillage and the coals look wrong.

Im with villa_tom.
Ideally, get hold of the MI's. If not available but the coals look right and you have a data plate for other important info. then you could take a photo and place back as per your photo...but the coals may not be in the right way to start with.
You also need to be very careful with ventilation and spillage requirements. Ideally you should refer to the MI's for this rather than using the general standards.
Some fires have a random arrangement of coals but some have to be placed a certain way to give a good flame.
Give a good clean and if all tests pass and coals look good as per your judgment then ok. But if in any doubt you can leave it 'AR' in the absence of clear direction by MI's.

Of course it doesn't ,
but smoke test , spillage , and install of co alarm on service always helps along with quick dabble on iphone of fire model etc , or even contact manufacturer to email you coal layout generally guarantees this .
not had any issues using this tactic ,,,,, internet is a wonderfull thang

using the internet to get the coal layout is perfectly fine, its just that the original comment was take a pic and put them back the way they were, flue flow and spillage tests wont confirm what is in the POC's, if there is a problem with the burner or coal arrangement which effects combustion it will still heat up and go up the flue

In all honesty i dont get many fire services as most people i know do their own servicing from what i gather . gas safe do very little imo on informing the public about dangers of diy gas.Come across it more and more , cust asks how much to install fire ? not paying more than £50 otherwise do it myself, cookers same same everyone i know fits their own .

One called to service a dfe full of broken glass, which looked like a smashed windscreen. No MI's but customer swore that the glass was part of the original set up.No info on the data badge due to over zealous cleaning,so I didn't even have a manufacturers name.I hate gas fires!

thanks for the responses. not being fully experienced with gas fires im going with at risk with no manufacturers instructions especially with regards with inset and dfe gas fires mainly because of coal arrangements and spillage check locations unless i am able to get coal arrangements and spillage testing info on the internet :smile5:

speak to the customer and explain that the instructions will be required, if they dont have the internet then request name, model number etc... and find the instructions before you attend if possible.

for me personally if the instructions are not available for coal placement then i will not start the work.
