do they mean the pilot wont stay alight or the actual gas fire

could be asd is blocked or could as you said the thermocouple

The guy said the fire goes out. I havent actually been to the job yet but im going tomorrow. I just wanted a bit of a head start before i get there? whats the oxi pilot? Is it the same as precision pilot?

ODS pilots are designed to shut down the pilot and therefore kill the heater IF their is low oxygen in the room. The system works fairly well but it has one little flaw. During the warmer months when the heater is not in use, dust builds up inside the safety pilot and tends to reduce the output of the pilot flame much the same as if their was a low oxygen content in the room.as stated may just need a good service.

I Agree Dancin i should have known but i havent done any fires since doing my training 2 years ago, thanks for the help though guys
.

If it lights then goes out I would be checking for vitiation as the oxygen levels possibly drop when in use. Check the basics first before assuming it is a part at fault, it may be doing exactly what it is designed to do!

Sorry if thats sounds sucky eggy, not intended, but often overlooked.

As above, clump of dust lodged in the oxypilot port on the left hand side. Some are fitted with lint filters, but they're rubbish.

An oxy-pilot has an aeration hole below the pilot head, usually just under the frame that holds it onto the main burner.
Light the pilot & if it's slack & yellow tipped it's often just some fluff thats obstructing it, a sharp blow can clear it, if not you can strip it & clean the injector if it's the straight type, if it's connected with a pipe/nut then bent to the pilot head, you can't split it to clean the injector, you'll need a new pilot assy,
Often there is a code stamped on the bracket, look down, from directly above & you'll see it, it'll start NG,then 4 numbers, a spare parts speciallist will be able to identify it from this code

you may aswell perform a full service on the fire if the customer allows rather than just blowing the dust out the pilot bum. most likely never been serviced since fitting.

As other engineers have said its usually the oxypilot blocked and the flame is only just reaching the thermocouple, clear the oxypilot out from the hole underneath it with a can of compressed air.

and try and sell them a CO alarm.
fires in my opinion need them more than most other appliances
