got call off customer saying gas engineer had let them down can i call and fit a new fire - not much on so went today- they had bought an ilf fire i looked and the old fire was a baxi back boiler and fire not in use now as they got combi fitted 4 years ago. explained to them that they need a harth and the builders opening bricking up smaller when the back boiler is taken out and the flue line rneeds to be removed as i cant guarantee it and they may need a new one if the chimmney fails smoke test. customer said i must be trying to rip them off as other engineer was going to fit a flue collector and then fit fire to the existing flue and leave the fire 3" from floor as old fire was wall hung .just wondering how many people do fit fires to these old flues - called a mate who says he does as he thinks its safer to have a lined chimmney rather than unlined. i am not convinced and sticking on the right side of safety.

The liner could be 30-40 years old and completely rotten, they have no idea until it is removed and inspected, walk away knowing that it will not be you that is in the local paper having gassed the occupants, if others want to fit to an old liner let them do it, then ave a damn good laugh when it goes t--s up.

how many flue liners have you removed that have been in good enough condition to be re installed and would last the working life of a new appliance??

new liner please :)

sounds like they have been advised by a right idiot, walk away and let somebody else do what they want.

Maybe the reason the first engineer let them down was he found out that he's way was the wrong way.

The customer is always right! What muppet invented that stupid saying??? A custard that rejects your professional advise and considers you a rip-off merchant doesn't deserve to have you through their doors again IMHO..... However in these hard times, make sure you add an extra £100 to the quote for their cheek just in case they accept :)

Liners are supposed to be replaced every twelve years. Any way the time it takes to fit a box or do a connection properly, you could rip the old liner out. As above walk away, you can't polish a turd.

The trouble is that people have been indoctrinated by TV programs hosted by idiots such as Dom Littlewood into thinking that anyone in a van s a rip off merchant.

Spot on ant take the old liner out. Would never connect to an old liner, still i think most gas fires are crap

Agree with all of the above, dont listen to the cust, stick to your guns. They could be chancing there arm by saying if you dont do it, we will get the other guy instead.... I bet he didnt even let them down, he most probably was chatting to one of the lads in the merchants and they put him straight, dont do it!!!!! thats why he didnt show....
