Not sure on the clearnaces but my mate used to work for currys and install the cookers and they would find any reason to get out of doing the job. So while he may be right in what he's saying he may just not want to do the job, has the customer not got the MI's

no minimum clearance under the hob but it must have a non combustible partition if above a draw to stop stored items touching the underside of the hob

what would be the non combustible partition be ? called my local supplyer they never heard of one ,so do I :)

arnt hobs desinged with the non combustable bottom already on the nowadays? ie the metal plate that encloses all the gas workings?

ellis board/fire board in regards to cdodds post in the eyes of gas safe the bottom of the hob can still get hot

Some of the IKEA (Whirlpool) hobs now have it in their MIs that you need to put a partition below if there is no appliance underneath. Most of the Kitchen fitters I work with use a bit of backing board cut to shape.

not come across this but id think the easist way would be cut a gas fire sheet of ally and cut to size then self tap to bottom of hob with spacers to provide an air gap

most hobs have a clearance measurement in the instructions, normally around 30mm to 50mm from combustable materials. any draws underneath will need to have some protection fitted above them. As gas man has said, a piece of fire board/asbestlux.

i went to a hob for a friend of a friend a few weeks ago and told them that i would only fit it if clearences and fire board was fitted and pipework altered to suit. Somebody else fitted it for them, i got asked around to take a look.... gas tap fitted infront of plug socket, no clearances meet and because they misplaced the clips it was not even secured down to worktop. I just laughted refused to touch it and walked away.

so what happened to your duty of care ?

i was there as a friend of a friend and attended as a favor under duress. (ie. not a paying job) i advised they ask the installer back and refused to touch it, it was the "duty of care" of the installer to fit it correclty.

you can tell some people till your blue in the face and they still dont listen. Sometimes you have to walk away and let them learn a lesson, you can noty be held responsible for others actions.
