I fitted a boiler, that has a horizontal flue 20mm too long sticking through the wall and he wants me to call back. 25miles to cut it back.. Apparently, on a potterton heatmax the flue should only be 50mm from the outside wall to the start of the plastic slots, end cover..

NCS, one day someone could die i guess ? someone lock me up and throw away the key....

Shocking. Nothing like this then?

I was pulled once for a condense being 20mm too long.......and i had to change it.......makes me sick when i can spot uncut flues poking out of illegal installs all day long and nobody does anything about it.

thats beth tweedle's flat, she practices the high bars on them flues.

stick another rubber collar on and gain 20mm.

Atleast we can all have a laugh about it.. Think i'll ring baxi tomorrow and talk to them about it, to me it just reads like its best practice but the flue being slightly too long isnt a danger to life and i dont even think their is anything wrong with a flue being 20mm too long.. its a guide to go off but classing it as NCS ? it just seems crazy, but i dont think i'd get away with it..

whats this issues, i fit plenty of flues longer than shown in the instructions. as long as the flue can be exposed outside in sunlight and rain its fine. I would assume the manufacturer will tell you its fine and does not need altering.

yeah i was thinking of something along those lines but would the gas inspector be happy enough ? would save smashing the flue back out and cutting it back.. was also thinking of taking the plastic end off and cutting it back that way without disturbing the wall..

tell the inspector to do one if the manufacturer says its fine. if hes not happy tell him to phone baxi.

What happens on a single skin wall like an outhouse or something?

Most flues have a minimum length so would stick through further, would he make you builder another wall?

Hes trying too hard.

Just got off the phone to baxi.. He said the white part of the flue isn't designed to be outside in the elements.. He said to either tape it up or paint it black, anything to protect the white part of the flue and that apparently keeps the gas inspector happy and their own baxi engineers..

Saves me having to smash it out, so I'm happy :)

Has anyone known the white part of the flue rot away ?

aesthetically it looks better not seeing the white but i see no reason in classing it ncs.. if you look hard enough their are thousands of flues not cut to proper length which have been there years without issue.. some over 10 years without issue..

The other issue i have with the MIs is pipe sizing.. if the gas meter is one foot away from the boiler but its piped up in 15mm its NCS even if its getting 21mb working pressure.. I don't get it...

I'm surprised they didnt ask me to do the 50mile round trip to amend the flue on my push bike as they're obviously very keen on saving the planet with all these thermostats, they love thermostats..

Mickie, MI's usually state one or both of the following:
Inlet pipe should be no smaller than inlet connection, or inlet pipe should be fitted as per BS6891
If it says no smaller than 22mm inlet then you can't do it in 15mm, it will be in case of low inlet
If it says as per BS6891 then as long as it delivers m3/hr then it won't ever be NCS

Thats such a teachers comment kirk!

I agree, but if any of you were asked to audit it would you have listed the NCS or ignored it? The only correct comment is to list it, but a lot of the pain of a comment is on the delivery
