Hello

I'm looking for a little help, i have bought a new house this year and have just had a new hob fitted when the man finished he said that we had a gas leak and he would not switch the gas on he told us to contact the builder and that they should fix it. The builder came straight out and fixed it, it was in the ceiling and he told me that it was a kink in the pipe and that these thing just happen with expansion and contraction. I am not to confident now but don't know anything about plumbing : (
i would appreciate it very much if someone could offer me some advice thank you very much if you do.

Helen

I would advise you to get your GSR man out to check before turning the gas on. It won't take him long to do a leakage test, but will ensure your safety.

firstly builders arent normally gas qualified, and the guy installing your hob should have been able to sort out a leak. for future reference ask anyone working on your boiler oe gas appliances for their gas safe id card, it will say on the back what they are allowed to work on. no card, show them the door. finally gas pipes are copper, and they dont just kink!!! poor installations cause leaks, end of, builder is basically waffling a load of tripe to you.

Welcome to the forums Helen.

Concerned about this. Is the builder gsr? Seriously doubt it.

Call in the National Grid Gas Emergencies (Formally Transco Gas ) – 0800 111 999 (This is a 24 hour emergency line)

They will come out within the hour and check the installation for free.

Contact the gas safe register and get the builder checked, they will also come and check your installation.

and the hob installer just walking away!!!!!!

If he was there to fit the hob on a price he isn't going to get involved in ripping the place apart, and knowing there is some dodgy work in there he won't want to certify the whole, place, as long as he left it safe then he's done nothing wrong

And what Kirk said.

Did he cap the metre?
Did her write out a warning notice?
or did he just tell her about it and leave it live and leaking?

my gripe is, if he had any sense he did a tightness test initially, finds a leak does the hob, then cant confirm his work is safe and leaves it for someone else to sort. In that situation either trace and sort the leak first or just report the leak, cap and go then come back once the leak is cured by someone else. He cant prove his work is safe, so is just as bad in my mind as the original installer!!

hello again

I am even more worried now, the house was built by bellways and when i said builder i meant the same plumber who plumbed the house who works for bellways came back and fixed the leak! i have got a certificate from them that i recieved when the house was built. What should i do!!

I don't think i trust them now.

Helen. Call the national grid on 0800 111 999

They'll be with you in an hour and will check your safety for now.

If the drop is the same before and after then his work is in all probability safe. I agree however that if thw drop on initial test was beyond permissable drop he shouldnt have continued.

Back in the real wold tho.
He tested the supply, found a say 6mb drop thought if i abandon this job i'm down 80 quid and an hour or so's time.
Fitted the hob re tested it with the same result and maybe soapyed his joints for belts and braces then shut it down as he wouldn't have been paid to find the leak.
No matter what we preach life in the big bad world works in different ways.
Btw the builder or his plumber or whoever came back out was talking through another hole.
I hope you follow the advice to get it rechecked.

Metre or Meter, her or he? sorry should not mark English homework in public. Probably had a few gins, like me.

Hello again

i am even more worried now as the plumber who came out and fixed the leak is the same one who installed the plumbing in the house when it was built, and it was his boss who was explaining what had gone wrong. Also when I said builder I was meaning one of the largest house builders in the uk.

they are even worst ......as they would cut any corner just to have a bigger profit

Profit and gas leak.... Did install 3mb drop only boiler and all new pipework. Tranny came out reached same conclusion it's the meter. Cap off and leave. Custard calls supplier it's BG - told as she has no insurance it's her problem. National grid don't see it that way thankfully! I was accused of drilling a hole In the meter, nothing to do with it being soaked in break fluid and surrounded by about 200 used discs and pads!

Maybe they're fitting brakes on the meter as its rotating too quickly ! Lol
