Hello. We have recently moved into a new property and discovered after a few days a serious gas leak. The emergency gas engineer found it to be 13mb. Is it possible that 4 weeks before this date (given that we now know the gas pipe from the outside wall to the kitchen was corroded due to its protective sleeve having 'slipped' when the house was built), the reading was ok at 2mb? In other words can it drop to such a serious level in so short a space of time?

anything is possible, possibly it was disturbed ?a pipe that snaps goes from o to open end in a second

Thanks Steve. If there is a small of gas would it not show as a higher reading than 2mb? I ask as 4 weeks later we had the same smell of gas in the same place and it read 13mb?

Good grief! Turn your gas off!

Why hasn't the gsr who tested your installation repaired it?

yes it can drop to that amount

are you implying the previous engineer lied so the sale could go through??

??? There is no drop if you can smell gas. No drop on pipe work allowed so illegal all round

Sorry, a bit misleading..we have now had it fixed but we are trying to understand how it dropped from 2mb to 13mb in 4 weeks given that the only indications on both occasions was a smell of gas in the living room and the actual damage to the pipe was corrosion which wouldn't have altered in that 4 weeks..its a bit strange to say the least unless the reading 4 weeks ealreir had been incorrect???

Yes, that's what we believe, that the vendor managed to get the plumber to 'lie' about the drop as otherwise it just doesn't make sense and they also had suddenly not allowed us near the property during this time just before exchange!!!

There is allowances in some cases, but only a GSR enginner will know this, unfortunately we dont give information regarding this out to people who are not gas safe registered.

The amount of gas leak your stating is very serious and should be sorted asap!!

Have you got a boiler that has a pilot light on by any chance?

I have responded to this but nothing has been posted yet???

Isn't the smell of gas ID regardless of anything else and should be turned off until leak can be found and fixed?
