I always get asked by customers

"would they check that when they do a service?"

and I pretty much always say "NO" as they only check the gas appliances, not the system.

But i am curious, what else do you check or have to check and what else do people go above and beyond to check?

Do you check pressure, inhibitor levels, flow to taps, leaks in system i.e.?

Just service the boiler then walk the system, it's what I was taught and what I'll do forever. Plus it's nice to have a nose about other people homes.

It depends on what the customer wants and what my gut feeling is with the system.

I wouldn't check inhibitor levels, I would just add more if I felt it might be required - again this is gut feeling.

Generally though, I am concentrating on the appliance itself.

Not interested in the system! I'll assume it's been installed by a professional... My sole interest is the appliance in question and it's compliance with current regs unless asked otherwise! I got sick of walking around folks homes looking for a money opportunity whilst working for BG TBH :)

If you are in a hurry, stick the analiser in the flue from outside and stick the bill through the letterbox with a printout stapled to it

That reminds me of a bloke who had a gauge tube wrapped around, and 'U' gauge wrapped within, a tool role! That was his servicing kit!!

I'm seriously toying with offering 18 month maintenance contracts coz I've seen enough to know that the mi's recommendations are outdated IMHO :)

Hmm! Water isn't gas, so why check its safe all your interested in is the appliance. If however you found it was running dry and overheating then yes the system is affecting the appliance. It is at that point you take your gas man face off and put on your central heating engineers or plumbers face.

I will always ask if there are any issues with the system before I start. It can save the phone call telling you that since you serviced the boiler such and such radiator doesn't work and it must be your fault.

Had one yesterday, serviced a boiler in a gallery last week, no dhw yesterday. Boiler was ok, the pressurisation set had failed. This was in a far corner of the boilerhouse behind some aircon units, didn't even know it existed. But it was the same "It was ok before you touched it!"

Luckily for me the gallery director, being a nosy sod, followed me in and was there when I reset it.

A lot of mfi's refer to checking the system pressure. I usually top it up if low but bleed the rads also. I check the AAV for leaking and when I fire up the boiler, I check to see if the pressure gauge shows an extreme increase, as I can point out any potential repairs to the customer i.e. recharging expansion vessel. I ask if they are having to top up the pressure a lot. I check the rads are heating up all over. I find a boiler service is often requested when something isn't quite right. Sometimes I will check the HW temp. and flow rate if the boiler or cylinder is older. Being thorough is a good way to know the system so if there are future problems, I may already have an idea when they phone. And I can advise the customer of any potential problems. Tried and tested approach!
