Any experience of these any one good or bad, must fit 10-12 a day.ersAfter working on contracts in the early 90's servicing 10 back boilers a day,i would think the main problem would be catching people in.Booked my met 1 ,some ads say must have had experience, cannot see anything challenging about fitting gas meters

Went for an interview for one of these jobs early this year. Had just got me CCN1 and all the tickets (except water heaters) and was told by the instructor on the gas course that the meter companies would snap us up cos all the procedures were still fresh in our minds. Bearing in mind I've been pipefitting and plumbing since 1987 and could do the job spinnin on me chopper, was told that they only wanted people with experience swapping meters. Also applied for a load through agencies and was told the same. Long story short, good luck but don't get your hopes up!

nothing ventured and all that,Might take Met 1 anyway looks a toss easy number.

the experience is just procedural knowledge i guess. I know a number of guys fitting meters for energy companies. They have to hit about 7 to 8 a day, it depends on the area coverd and problems you find. You normally have to sit and wait for the grid if you have any problems which can take a few hours and effect your day.

5 mins to change a meter 1hr for paperwork and visually checking and re-lighting (and being liable for) all gas appliances

many gas meter fitters dont even have any appliance qualifications.

As others have said, its not the fitting meters thats hard, its the relighting (knowing your appliances) and procedures when things go wrong or aint correct.

I got a "Job" with Enterprise I lasted Two days they didnt ring me while Lunch sending me all over using my derv fitted about 5 per day it was repair or replace on pre payment self employed Basis.
One lad worked on call Nights he earned £200 for a full week as nobody rings later on they just want you on call to cover their contracts and are not bothered what you earn no beer all week !!!!!! they arranged to put me on nights the week after i started so that nailed if I was off......Asto the boilersthey told me if it wont work by normal means they have to sort it themselves Get a GS in

been to about 3 in last few weeks, new meter capped and get someone in to test and light?

not 100% sure how its done, i know a couple of electrical meter fitters(electricians) that have had a few months training and got ccn1 and meters and they change meters and relight with no problems. If they come across anything they are unsure of they just phone one of the qualifed engineers to come around and decide what to do.

This type of thing is going to be more common due to smart metering, being able to send one person to change both meters is what they are going to be looking for in the future. My best mate is a heating engineer fitting meters, he now fits electric meters too. No pay rise tho i dont think.

Training centers are full of it did he tell you "you can earn 60,000 pa easy what rescission"

I've done a lot of contract meter work, its never easy gaining access, there's no incentive for a customer to stay in just to have a meter changed.
If the meter is on two flexibles, one will have to be re-piped solid, most price per job includes up to 1 metre of pipe and fitting a bracket.
Phoning details through takes a long time and the planning is normally pants. Never mind jobs in the same road, sometimes each one was in a different town so lots of non-paid travel time.
Hey-ho,

on the meter job I was on if it had 2 flexis the one at the owners side was at fault so just NCS it was ok.

I had a mate doing the meters and he said it was a nightmare driving around waiting for people to be in and he was getting £1 for every card he put through the door to make an appointment time

might not bother with the MET 1,looks like a lot of the meter jobs seem ****e.Good to get feedback from those who have done it before.

saying that I had a mate who has just started doing commercial meter changes and that is a totally different ball game and the prices are good according to him

In regards to meter fitters not needing appliance qualifications for the appliances is misleading. The only way thats possible is in a newbuild situation where the meter is being capped at the outlet. An other qualified installer is coming to work on the installation and it's him that will be signing off on the installation.

ESP Engineers dont have appliances on their GSR cards and they undertake a lot of meterwork on behalf of gas suppliers as infill work. Having said that, most as long term time served types who have previously been fully registered. On new fixes they would just cap the outlet and leave it for a GSR to do commissioning of new pipework/appliances.

I have heard lots of stories of meterwork. Some will say how much they make whilst i think its closer to the truth that they chase round all over the place on a piece rate basis and struggle. I'm also guessing I&C meterwork is better.

Lasted 6 days on MET1, wanted me to work 24/7every second week through out the whole of London Southeast down to Bournemouth and Enterprise said they might pay me a bit of travel

Lucky he got a quid for a card, I was offered zilch incl travel at 24/7

There you have it then...low grade work which companies think they can pay peanuts for...
