Doing a routine service today and upon opening the gas box instead of finding the usual cobwebs and leaves i come across a nigh on submerged gas meter !!!
The handle was just above water level along with the test nipple the rest was fully submerged.I noted on cp12 about water level . Apart from the obvious possible water damage shoiuld i have taken this further ,contact supplier , or shut off gas .
Cant say have come across this before nor heard of anyone who has so was suddenly on a what action scenario/.

I'd make the supplier aware personnally! Was it a submerged meter box install?

Yes front garden job semi concealed type .
flipped lid up to see prob majority of meter underwater ,threw me a bit as never come across it before .

as you havent fully inspected the meter, and due to the water it is AR (potential for a problem due to corrosion causing leak) cant be leaking or you would see the gas bubblig in the water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know you shouldnt, and obviously i wouldnt, but i know a guy who would have knocked a wee hole in the bottom of the box to let the water drain out to inspect the meter, then obviously report to the supplier that the box must have a hole in it for the water to get in

Thing is I bet the supplier off loads to the home owner!! Those things are suppose to be water tight I thought!!

As long as it isn't leaking gas or effecting the operation of the appliances inside the house it'd be NCS and deffo not your problem as the meter belongs to the supplier ....

I couldnt knock a hole in the meter box as i would have if i could. Property was only 4 years old and the ground workers had built pathway to meter box and whilst doing so surrounded said box with compo .
I have noted it on cp12 so put it back to gas company to remedy .

did you know when methane rises through water it smells worse, well, mine does/. !!!!

Depends on what type of meter. SC6's sc6.jpegare made with a plastic case so wouldn't do any harm. Other types will rust.
It might just be a one off thing due to heavy rainfall and bad ground conditions and look at it on another day and it would be clear. Seen it a few times before, all on new estates.
You should report it.
Semi concealed boxes have drainage holes in the bottom but won't do much good on a bed of compo.

The meters are plastic and the boxes have drain holes...the tide ebbs and flows. It makes it easier to spot leaks..

Thats a new one for testing if there is a leak anywhere on a meter lol. I have seen a meter blown up like a rugby ball after a guy put the water main on the gas , he had water coming out of the hob
