we want to change our electric hob to gas .... no gas in the kitchen.... the meter is on a different outside wall just along from the kichen wall, however the pipe that supplies the gas to the meter is obviousely okay , but the pipe we would need to lead the new pipe from is not so straight forward as it goes straight into the wall from the meter...leaving hardly anything to add a new pipe to, plumber says this is a big job ....surely this is a common problem and a good plumber should find it pretty straight forward he says he couldnt do it for less than £300 pounds ...we're on a tight budget how much do you think this would cost , approx 7 meters of piping and and possibly 4 elbow joints etc

You're not just paying for the materials or the time taken to do the job, you're paying for his overheads, his experience, training etc.

Best thing to do is get another couple of quotes from gas safe registered engineers.

Please go to Gas Safe Register | Ensure your gas engineer is registered. or post a thread in the 'I'm looking for a plumber / gas engineer' section of these forums remembering to include your location. Is that to connect and fit the new hob too? Are the hobs like for likes sizes? Is the original Pipe from the meter in copper?

installation of new hob plus new gas run as well as gsr sign off plus premium for any gas works sounds o.k to me

seems a good price to me ask british gas for a quote and yoi will probly end up biting the first fellas hand off make him a brew and say a big thanks

if you dont like the quote get another one.

we cant really advise much more than that tbh. the internet has certain limits :)

It never ceases to amaze me how people in general think that heating engineers all try to have your pants down when pricing gas work stating that its only a bit of pipe and a couple of bends. We spend a shed load of money and time getting GRS and then we are expected to give our investment and experience away. If you want a professional to do a professional job, then expect to pay a professional rate...........if not hire a monkey to break the law and then wait for the bang.........rant over.

just been to a gas leak. Found the nut on the gas connector not even hand tight, sorted it, still a leak traced to the boiler inlet valve, replaced washer and checked all ok. Turns out that the boilers been in 2 years, serviced last week by original installer of all gas work, gas leak at hob mentioned, and he said he would pop back sometime to sort it. Why did they use him, he was reccommended as being a cheap gsr installer!! Guess which expensive gsr has been invited back next year to do the servicing!

before you all shout riddor, why bother the custard wanted his system safe now, not happy to wait for hse to come out next week

RIDDOR is a waste of time mate. Make safe and forget about it is what I do. FairPlay with the new work though.

all l wanted was to know if this was a sensible quote l am a retird person on a tight budget l'm not a gas engineer but all l need is a fair quote for a good jod s l have no idea whatsoever what the cost may be, been ripped off before and will not be ripped off again. if you dont like people asking these sort of questions dont answer them unless you can do so nicely

As a few others have already said it sounds like a good quote.

There's a world of difference between getting ripped off and getting yourself killed with this particular type of job. You've asked us to speculate given a tiny bit of information, eyes on see's the whole story. Unfortunately for you we see this kind of question all too often. We also see illegal DIY work carried out.

As said before, if you're not sure get a couple of other quotes.
