I've been doing some wiring and noticed the gas pipe, a copper pipe marked with yellow tape. The pipe seems to go along the upstairs joists and drops into the living room in the top left hand corner of the ceiling. The walls are all dot an dab plaster board. What I want to work out is which direction it is likely to go to ensure I know where it is in the future. I have some coving in the corner between the ceiling and the wall. Is it likely to go down the wall behind the plasterboard in the corner and then run horizontally to the fireplace? Is there anything I can use to find where it goes? It seems to enter the fireplace from behind that I can see.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Ant

picture looks like a dropped Christmas ribbon:) ........Now the serious stuff! How the $$$$$ could anyone online answer this question? Hold on I'll give it a go!!!

Th pipe will MOST likely drop down the wall towards where a GAS FIRE would NORMALLY be installed... AND be visibly terminated? Or/Not?

Maybe a stupid question , God forbid, do you have a gas fire in the general direction the "Gas Pipe" generates towards? :)

Can you use an electronic pipe finder to trace it? All that can be said with relative certainty will be that bends will be 90 degrees.

Ant ... Sozz for the rant, nothing intentialy meant towards you :)

Who knows where any pipes or wires are burried? Take your best educated bet, expect that they are verticaly installed in a corner/place least likely to be penetrated? IMHO :)

If seriouly concerned then stay clear :)

can't realy work out from your picture what you mean but if the pipe is laid in the wall and it's unprotected then it is dangerous, imagine if someone wanted to drill through the wall to put a corner shelf or a picture up.....scary, i had this once, a guy was plastering his house and as he knocked back the old plasterboard there was a buried unprotected gas pipe, i ended up running a new gas supply on the outside of the house, if you are no longer using the fire it might be best to cap the pipe at high level just to be safe

The worst thing is that pipe is on the wall running perpendicular to where the fireplace is. The pipe drops below ceiling level but still has to travel 2m or so horizontal to the fireplace. We have only just moved into the house and I wanted to be sure where all the pipe and cable runs are...within reason. I realise nobody on the forum could tell me where the pipe would go more a guidance. The house is 10 year old and I was more wondering if there where specific rules which would guide me to where it is. I'm guessing it runs behind the plasterboard but is there any rules that it would go vertically straight down to a high and then run across?

Thanks anyway,
Ant

ant it probably runs down the wall to the floor then behind the skirting to the fire imho. do you know anyone with a metal detector?

Cheers Steve,
You think if I pop the skirting board off it might be there?

Ant

yes could be, if the skirting is stuck on. if it is nailed or screwed then probably not that far down.

if its behind the dabbed wall and fitted to regs then it will be incased in dab so its route will be solid all the way to the fire. tapping on the plasterboard may help indicate its route.

Is it likely to be low down where it crosses the wall to the fire. I have some electrical sockets between the fire and where I know the gas pipe drops below ceiling level. The electrical cables drop from the first floor I guess it's unlikely to pass behind he cables?

Cheers for the replies,
Ant
