Hi

Any help welcome.

What are the currently regulations regarding gas pipes in schools. My son has accidentally stepped on a gas pipe in school and broken it. He now faces permenant exclusion even though we have witnesses one a teacher saying it was accidental.

Just wondered if the pipe had to be a particular grade, coded, boxed in etc etc

cheers

Pipes should be located as to not be subject to mechanical damage

That's from the regs

Youll need Tamz for that

If you give us more detail, were is the pipe? how is it installed? then the guys on here will be able to give you much more amo.

I would have thought that the gas pipe would have been iron rather than copper !!

Deffo need to be iron pipe, unless protected from accidental/mechanical damage.

Have you thought about calling Gas Safe and asking for a inspector to do a site visit, could be other safety factors involved.

Thanks guys, really helps.

School have gone quite regarding the details

your son stood on a gas pipe in school ?? where was he the plant room ??

a gas pipe in a school should be made of mild steel, painted yellow, and clearly marked that it is carrying gas, and correctly bracketed/supported, it should also not be in positions which it would be subject to accidental damage

that's not from the regs that's just my view of it from experience of working in commercial builds including schools, and a bit of common sense

Marking of pipes23.—(1) Any person installing, elsewhere than in any premises or part of premises used only as a dwelling or for living accommodation, a part of any installation pipework which is accessible to inspection shall permanently mark that part in such a manner that it is readily recognisable as part of a pipe for conveying gas.(2) The responsible person for the premises in which any such part is situated shall ensure that the part continues to be so recognisable so long as it is used for conveying gas.

Thanks to all for the help.
It turns out the pipe in question was a copper pipe in the food tech room.
The school have removed a cooker from the class room, had the pipe capped off but left the copper pipe hanging. Been like it for 5 to 6 months.

I would say that the school needs to tread carefully as to what punishment they give your son.
If any is given I would be asking to get a gas safe inspection and report as to how safe the pipe was before this accident

it should be boxed in or have a cage around it to prevent people standing on it, if its just been left hanging there then its the schools fault

Its not the schools fault it will be the contractor's fault whom they put the work out to tender . i can imagine it should go back to the county council whom the school is registered under.

As already stated if you wish to chase it up contact gas safe about your concerns .
