Happy New Years Eve,

Just a curiousity call really. When I use gas PTFE I wrap maybe 5-6 times on a male 1/2", Ive just read though that there is only need for 1 wrap.

Any of you wrap once or more and if once have you ever had any issues?

was always told gas ptfe must be used on gas fittings but maow many plumbers buy special ptfe not many i bet

yeh, I am talking about gas fitting buckley plumb - just curious how many wraps of gas ptfe you use on a threaded gas fitting - say a 1/2" - 15mm comp, as I now think I might be using to much, I guess as long as gas tight and using the right materials who cares

Cheers

When using gas PTFE on a gas fitting it is a requirement of the regulations that only 1 wrap is used.

If you are wrapping 5 or 6 times on other than gas then that is another matter.

I have never had any problems using single wrap on gas.

It really depends on how good the fitting mating surfaces are. There is no rule off thumb. As you say as long as it is gas tight.
If you have good fittings then that is why gas tape is termed "one wrap", you should only really need one wrap with 50% overlap to give a sound joint. If you think that may not be enough then give it another wrap or so.

Thats where it gets its name from, 1 wrap Gas tape.
I only ever use Jet Blue anyway on all my cold, hot and gas fittings, just buy the one thing it makes life so much easier and the tool box so much lighter.

dont you use any tape??
Make you fittings nightmare to get apart if not .

Why would you want to take a sealed fitting apart?
I only use PTFE on immersion heaters. Put jetblue on all your comp fittings and threaded fittings, never ever get a leak. So no need to break a joint. Anyway jet blue is a non setting compound so comes apart.

compound is ok on tapered threads but many parallel threads do not tighten together to good and i will use gas ptfe. Normally one rap overlapped 50% (so 2 raps) is ok for most threads but some do need more. Sometimes putting to much on causes it to be pushed out of the thread so you do have to be careful and use judgement.

Gas will often eventually sneak past non gas ptefe tape, leading to an escape.

Errr not sure you should using parallel threads for gas unless it has a back nut.

Have come across this many a time where years later have to break joint and cant as only used jointing compound ,,,even worse on immersion as 50/50 as to wether the cylinder ends up getting wrecked !!
