Hi there, I've decided its time to go out on my own as the job i'm in at the minute is awful! I am from Northern Ireland, but live in Bristol with my gf, because of the severe shortage of work in N.I. I am getting a loan to buy a second hand van, more tools, insurances and public liability (which I am unsure of the cost?). I am NVQ 2 +3 trained, worked 4 years domestic and 3 years commercial, plus 6 months working in Aus outback installing solar panels. I know my stuff reasonibly well and would consider myself very tidy without trying to brag. I was wondering if it is a necessity to have gas safe in England, or can it wait until I can cough up the £2995 i've been quoted to pay for it?! Also I find it hard to gauge the economy for plumbing In England, as I have only been here for 6 months and N.I is worse evertime I go home, so are you plumber out there kept busy at the moment, as new building seem to keep coming up unlike home??

Thanks for your time guys, Rob

To be able to work on gas, yes you do need to be Gas Safe registered.

You've been quoted £2995 for what exactly?

Oh, I know that mate, I wont touch gas unless there is a gas safe man to test it after, I ain't an idiot. I was quoted to do a 2 week intensive course (practical and theory), then i would have to do a portpholio over a month and that's it. Does that seem like an unreasonible price?
Thanks

gas safe is a necessity to work on gas
plumbings hard work as you know and in my opioun underpaid ,90% of my work is gas related,
better work ,more money but more responsability

this comment scares me, although it is probably the way im interpreting it, IF you mean you will have one to one full supervision from a fully qualified gas engineer while you do a bit of gas to build up your portfolio of evidence then that is fine, IF you mean you will do the work then get someone to check then that isnt good,

a two week intensive course? what do you hope to learn in that time, the bpec Category 2 course for time served experienced plumbers is 8-10 weeks plus however long it takes to build up a portfolio is tight enough, the cost for that is about £3200, and with us includes a placement to build up your portfolio

Surely if you have NVQ level 3 Plumbing, then this included the gas and the portfolio and you would have completed the gas assessments, to enable you to be in a position to apply for GAS SAFE REGISTER registration?

Nvq3 in northern Ireland covers oil not gas

I would recommend you get GSR registered as will get you more work and can advertise yourself as gas safe . Had recent dealings withgas safe tho and from what they state if your a competent person you can work on gas wether gsr or not .

Statement in bold might be what they told you - I seem to remember your post on that.
But it is highly questionable and I would NOT recommend people do work if they think they are competant but not gsr.

It is also true to say that the FINES for doing gas work without being gsr are ridiculously low.
