Spoke to the inspector i was ment to see today but had no clue he was coming! Apparently they are having trouble notifying engineers their inspection dates. anyways we arranged a date for him to come see one of my combi installs and he will test me on a few thing (tightness test, gas rate, taking a working pressure ect.) One thing that got me thinking was he mentioned testing safety devices. i usually only do installs and commission as per MI's but they dont usually ask for any testing of safety devices. Which got me wondering what the experienced engineers on this forum do to check safety devices on a combi just to prepare myself that little bit extra.

Cheers

think mate it might be turning off gas and seeing boiler go to lock out,but you should get a lot more answers as the day goes bye,

I'd imagine he'd be wanting you to know how to test that the gas valve shuts off in an emergency? This is how I'd be checking it... No doubt others will have their ideas ...

  • Turn gas & electric off to boiler via iso & spur
  • Connect your gauge to P1 gas valve inlet pressure point :D
  • Turn both back on & set boiler away working :38:
  • Once burner is on turn the gas iso off. Depending on what boiler you're on will determine the sequence of events before lock-out occurs :willy_nilly:
  • Once boiler has locked out turn iso on again to get standing pressure in your gauge tube then turn iso off again :pimp2:
  • If the valve is passing the gauge will drop otherwise give it 2mins

That's without looking in a book so I may have missed something? They aren't out to catch you out though just check your competence :)

cheers guys, was just a tad on the unsure side, il still be really nervous even though the guy isnt there to catch me out, hate feeling like im on the spot

and when you turn gas back on boiler should not relight without you resetting it first

Either tightness test at the meter or mini tightness test on appliance after its locked out, normally done at 20mb for 1 min. Basically your testing the lockout/safety has shut the gas valve fully and the appliance can not start up again unless its manually reset.

There are also some set times an fsd should cut out by, check your books.

Yeah 60 seconds for fsd but no fsd on the instalation i have arranged for us to see

You said your showing him a recent combi install, flame rectification is your fsd, 60 sec as said

Gotcha just had my head in the viper gas books looking at all the gas safety devices and just rambling

It won't be 60 sec on a combi. Read the instructions and it will tell you how many times it will try to fire before it goes to lockout.

What combi is it?

My gas safe inspection last year was about 20% questioning about testing safety devices, so make sure you understand all fsd's/devices not just on the boiler your fitting on the day as you may get questioned on others.

Vokera unica. Didnt suggest this to cust but a neighbour had one fitted and she wanted exact same. Phoned cust to arrange access and she told me she was very pleased with her boiler and there was no need for me to visit haha
