Gas Safe probation inspection

Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I have my Gas Safe inspection coming up on Monday and this will take place at my house.

I will be carrying out a service on the boiler and doing the basic checks. Even though my background is fires and fireplaces. But the fire has been capped off a while ago. Note, the property is my girlfriends mothers house.

I know that he may ask about the cooker but I also know that there is no chain or brackets on there (large Aga gas fan oven). It is sufficient to point out to him that I recognise that there is no chain on there and that I could note this down and inform the customer? I didn't install or service any of these appliances either.

Any more advise on the inspection would be hugely appreciated.

We can not tell you too much on the public open forum I'm afraid but if you have passed your ACS then you should have no problems my friend, The first inspection is the most nerve racking but it will be OK if you know your stuff. Welcome to the forum and good luck.

You could show him the fire and explain why it has been capped off. It won't do any harm.
The inspector will more than likely come from a Gas (working) background so he/she will have been where you are. They are human too. They are there to help guide you as well as check you're safe. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you are not sure of something.

Make sure the boilers safe before you start. Unlike me on my first inspection my mum's boyfriend kindly let me service his late 50s back boiler and fire to which I condemned . He wasn't best please but then again, if it ain't safe it ain't safe.

Ive recently just had my first inspection 3months ago. I was a nervous reck! The inspector wasn't the "Hitler" type, actually far from it made me feel really at ease and was actually very patient and helpfull.

You'll be given a pop quiz to start with on basic stuff you should know. show him how to commission / service the appliance, explain what you would look for, ECV access, label tape, Bonding, sleeving etc.. and just keep calm.

1 word of advice as i got a bit of a grilling for it, make sure you have a landlord safety sheet or similar to fill out whilst your there if you are actually doing a service. Or at least a diary in which you can right down analyser results in etc. Or show a digital calendar with were you've been and what you've done etc... I found my gas safe inspector rather strict on this sort of stuff. Make sure your got some AR/ID stickers and forms too!!

I have my inspection coming up soon, will I lose my licence if I fail? Just want to know the worse case scenario.

it is not really a pass or fail. You know all you need to know for the inspection. All the working to a safe standard and gas checks you already know as you have passed you ACS. If you don't "pass" I think your probation period is extended and another inspection a few months later.
