I have recently passed my ccn1 and my boiler appliance module and I am looking to get my own gas safe registration and I am aware that I have to have my jobs witnessed for the probation period and I know they check your tools is their anything out of the ordinarythey are looking for, any help would be much appreciated thanks.

TBH i think they just want to make sure you intend to get the work done safely, i have never met a bad CORGI/GSR inspector, i hope that is down to the way i treat them and the hard work put in making sure what i am doing is acceptable, they always find something to put in their report, who doesnt when they do an audit? but it is always fair and straight forward, if you have CEN1 and it was done recently you must have CPA1 as well, if you are doing work on HE condensing boilers they will be looking for you to have and be able to use a FGA, you can borrow or hire one, you dont need to own one right away, BUT be careful if you borrow or rent because he could ask you "what if you get called to a repair and dont have a FGA, how can you confirm the boiler is safe to leave"? the answer would need to be make safe till you get back with the FGA!!!!! make sure you have all the paperwork you might need, blank caps, meter caps, LDF yellow spool PTFE tape etc etc, all the stuff you need to make everything safe,

When the Gas safe inspector came out with me he offered me the chance to use his FGA, but I had mine so I didn't. I got asked the question of what would you do if didn't have an FGA aswell. Just remember they are not there to trick you or try and make you make a mistake. They are there to help if anything, the bloke who checked me was great to be honest. Just make sure you have yourself a nice boiler to work on when he comes out with you. I did mine on a Worecester 28i which I had been working on non stop in an estate by me for the four months previous plus I had just done the Worcester the week before so that helped. But I really wouldn't worry about him coming out he just asks you questions that you'll know the answer to anyway.

villa_tom what answer did you give him when he asked you.

Class the boiler as "at risk" and do not down grade until you can a FGA

Got mine in feb, wants to see 3 jobs, the problem im having is all the jobs ive done the customers will be working on his inspection day.Only 1 customer so far will be in on the day.

He only checked one of my jobs and it was the next door neighbours brand new boiler. I was quite lucky though as I rang up to cancel my appointment and they wasn't to happy so the inspector rang me and fitted me in the next day. He did originally want to check me on the job and then book in to see me again on another two, be he was happy enough just to pass me off on the one job. I suppose it depends who you get really. They quiz you on ventilation and pipe sizing alot, well he did when he checked me anyway

sounds simple but what about work for friends and family, or your own boiler, just make sure you run your eye over it very carefully before you take him back, dont want to end up with egg on your face if you miss something that he picks up

Spot on. He doesn't have to know that you know the person your working for does he!

it honestly wouldnt be a problem if he knew, he cares about safe gas work, nothing else, and some guys are too quiet so any work is work to practice and keep your hand in
