Im about to register with gas safe , just need to sent application off, but it states that i will have inspection from gas safe to check my work. Now i am employed by another company so all work i do would be on weekends ect, and i dont know how much gas work i will get ...... if any yet, how soon do they usually come out to check you???

youll get unannounced inspections with no notice at al. If your lucky, it will only be two inspectors and you will recognise them by the long leather coats. :) Quit worrying, they are there to help! and it will be months not days before you see anyone

So you are not gas safe with the company you work with now? Cause if you are you can get them to come out and check the work that you are doing with them as long as you register for yourself to. Kills two birds with the one stone.

nope, not with the company i work for now, i have done it in collage and did my portfolio with my previous employer , i have the CCN1 , CENWAT , CPA1 certificates, would like to go back to collage to do more appliances and LPG but cant aford to do them all atm , so ill try and get some work just servicing ng boilers and maby try and get a few installs before taking a serious plunge and doing the rest, plus my work contract is coming to an end in 2 months and dont know if they will renew it, so dont want to spend all my savings at once! dificult times!!!! haha

fell for that one again .......... am i allowed to use the sqube freebies i got thru the post on gas????? (yes i fell for that one aswell) haha

these short term contracts are winding me up atm , cant commit to anything!!!

Lame plumber is right they are very helpful and not there to trip you up. I only became gsr at the beginning of the year. Soon after I received a letter giving me a date for the inspection which was for about six weeks after I registered. Basically they wanted to visit 3 jobs. Luckily the work started to trickle in and I had some stuff to go at but gas safe said it wouldn't be an issue if I don't have any work I can start with my home address and arrange a follow up visit/s should it be needed. When he came out I just walked him through the basics as he asked nothing you wont know from your training, tightness testing, gas rating, checking working pressures etc. If I'm honest I probably got more from him than he asked of me. The main thing he wants to see is that you can do your checks properly and can recognise unsafe situations.

Got a visit next month, really don't know what to expect. They have asked to have access to 3 jobs I have completed, which could be difficult as its on a Wedneaday morning......

Easiest way to do 3 is ! at your own home, and pick a customer where you have installed/serviced 2 appliances.

This 3 appliances thing really winds me up as you cant ever get access to anyones house where you have installed or serviced any appliances.
I'm sure in this day and age they could check a small percentage of your work and send you an email with small gas questionaire to prove some knowledge .

I am not about to say how many inspections I have had over the years, but I recall taking Corgi to a boiler service which I had installed, and was asked to check a wall heater in the same property, that was deemed adequate.

A guy called me the other day and asked me if i was gsr, i told him no , bit im registering with them in the next week or so so i will be, he wants me to install 3 water heaters (lpg) and 1 system boiler for the ufh also lpg, he told me there is no big rush and he is willing to wait a couple of weeks, soon as i send them the money how quick can i start work?

Once you register gas safe usually get your ID to you quite quickly think mine only took a week or so. Remember LPG is a different kettle of fish which requires different tickets.

You have to have an inspection within the first 2 months of registering as you will be new and a risk, your local GSR inspector will meet you at your house, start by saying relax and he isnt there to catch you out - just have a chat and help you. He will then ask you about your experience, jobs you have had, who you work for and ask to look through your portfolio and certs ect.

He will then probably ask you to carry out a GSI on your property to make sure you are not dangerous and point you in the right direction should you miss anything.

If you havnt got any work for him to see/visit, pre-arrange to go to a friend or family members house and again carry out a GSI or a service.

Honestly they are not trying to make your life difficult, just touch base with you and help you out.

:)

When I had my inspection, work had just started to trickle in, he basically asked my to service my own boiler in front of him and asked me loads of questions. We the. Visited a customer whose fire I'd serviced. Mine was more of a friendly chat.

Had mine today, went well. Showed him a boiler I had serviced. He just wanted to see the basic saftey checks, tightness testing, flue analysing, gas rating etc. only thing I stupidly forgot was to do a let by test! He just asked questions about my plumbing background. Really helpful and friendly. They just want to know that your safe and competent.
