Hi guys. I'm currently completing my gas portfolio and just wondered what has to be done different if I wanted to go it alone in the future? My colleague is Gas Safe but only at work? Any info would be appreciated thanks
Nothing, once your qualified you can register yourself personally for gas safe. I think they put you on a probationary period, and check a few jobs before they leave you alone.
I'm not planning to go it alone as yet. Still got an awful lot to learn. I was just intrigued as to why you would only be Gas Safe if you work for a company.

Because the company pays the fees, and if you have the relevant qualifications your only under that umbrella while your doing there work. Gas safe is the licence to carry out the work. A company or an individual have to be registered.
So I'm paying for my own course and ACS assessments but I'll be working for a company. Does that mean I wouldn't be able to fit a boiler as a foreigner ??
For a company to add you on as an engineer I think it's £50. If you want your own registration to be able to register new installs and sign off your own work, you need a first time registration which I think costs you around £400. Plus you need your own insurance.
Not cheap, that's why not many do it. And it may break your terms of employment.
But ye, make sure you look at the terms of employment, I'm not allowed to register myself as they class it as me being a competition to them, and can take work away from the company.
Afaik in Scotland you can carry out your own work as long as its not for gain, so fitting a boiler for a mate is fine as long as you are registered with your employer and not making any money from it.
I went self employed and registered with gas safe about a year ago, all they do is put you on a 3 month probation period, one of their inspectors meets with you, asks you some technical questions then has a look at some of your recent jobs. Piece of cake really.
