Hi guy's,

What does everyone think about this Gas Tag thing that is coming in next year, there was a short piece about it in this month's Gas Engineer magazine saying it's going to be put in 7 million homes.

They claim it will cut out the cowboys but I'm struggling to see how as it just seems to be a data collection tag that sits on the gas meter which registered engineers will use an app to record the work on and then ping it onto the tag.

Surely an unregistered Engineer will just do the work, get paid and ignore the tag.

Load of bollox I could see if it wouldn't let any gas out of the meter unless your registered etc but it's just a record as you say

Gas is regulated as we know but the future is not gas for heating. It may be around for the next decade or so as it is now, but renewable stuff is the future. Regulate the industry who install the new technology without the knowledge like it is with gas now. That is my take on it

I've said many times, If the only people who could buy Gas appliances and parts for Gas appliances had to be a Gas safe registered and something was physically done to log who bought that appliance or part, then that would really help. I think it has to start with the merchants regulation, we are regulated enough.
Lot's on here will agree with that I think?

I also agree with Darren. More red tape and non-sense, more time filling things in. There's does not seem to be any problem with ignoring this tag!!

Let's face it, if you have a non-registered installer working in your home and something goes wrong now, most insurance companies will find a way out of paying (because the home owner didn't use a registered installer). So this is already the case isn't it?

It's all ballcocks.

Another company with a big idea that won't make a difference.

Another 'can I have a slice of your pie' bunch, who expect us to comply.

Well the pie is getting smaller by the day. When do you think they will go and bake their own pies and stop looking at ours?

Is there only us working for a living?

Regulate the Merchants. Make it so that only we can buy.

Rant over, My opinions only.

Do you wish to have to buy your new light fittings from the contractor. Do you wish sales of car parts banned to DIYers. Should cable on be sold to electricians.?

We are already in a priveleged trade position, and I suspect that demands for restricted sales are driven by desire for profit, rather than safety

We may like to think we are Gods gift to Humanity, but gas fitting is not exactly rocket science - and there are RGIs that should not be allowed near a hammer, let alone a blowlamp.

I recall a push about 10 years ago for trade counters to ask for corgi ID, to be fair, if you had to show your ID to by a Gas boiler part it would cut out all cowboys, why gas safe/goverment can't enforce their own rules (regs) is thier problem.

It's a register, hence, you have to register to be pair of it.

Best way would be just selling boilers to gas safe engineers simple is that. But everyone single one can get prices informations and the boiler which silly. No protection against cowboys and homeowners.

What?

Are you saying the general public should not have access to the list price of boilers or parts?

Surely not, that would mean you and me could go out and order a new van or fga and you could pay way way way more than i do for the van or fga. And you think thats fair?

Yes i charge a few quid more for the boiler part than i pay for it, this is because the customer is buying it from me based on my fault finding skill, but (if youre saying) prices should be kept hidden from customers youre totally miss guided.

Why the Damn should you pay less or more for a chicken from asda than anybody else?

Agreed, online makes for a more competitive market, no matter what you are buying, so what's the problem with that?

I'm assuming you go on line to double check you're not being totally ripped off prior to making a purchase. So surely you can't have a problem with anybody else (including your customers) going on line to check they are not being totally ripped off? Or perhaps you don't think your customers should have the right to check prices???

Or is it one rule for customers and another rule for GSR Engineer's?

Isnt it to do with free trade or along those lines as to why the public can buy gas appliances?
Imho for what its worth if you have a gas appliance serviced fitted or whatever by a non gsr then it voids your house insurance , which in turn they contact your mortgage company or something like that
