Hi what are peoples views on removing gas taps on a cooker or hob while doing a service if they are stiff.I had a NEFF hob the other wk with a tight tap looking at the hob it would be a major job to strip and grease tap it looked as if the hob was made as throw away once worn unit.

I would ease & grease the gas taps on a cooker service, if practically possible. If it looked very awkward I would 1st contact my spares suppliers & ask if the gas taps are available, then would give the client the options. If the parts are not available I'd advise a new hob, but it would be their decission.

I would test the installation.
If a no gas leak, fill out a report saying the tap is stuck & giving advice.
Ask to disconnect the appliance & label if leaking.

The hardest part of our job can be taking cookers/hobs apart, but sometimes it's better to leave alone, if you feel it could be making it worse, than leaving alone providing it's safe.

nothing wrong with bit of graphite grease if they are stiff/passing gas.

As long as valves made from brass it is ok to re grease ,however if aluminium or alloy ,they require replacing ,as these tear and get scratched when they are used dry and should be replaced in case any damage has been caused

good point mr p, had one leaking recently, wiggled it a few times, no leak tried it again leaked, wiggled again no leak, advized custard to replace hob, gas safe tech desk stated if you leave it safe and its not leaking when you go thats ok, my feeling was itll leak again, but couldnt justify to the customer it was unsafe as it passed the tightness test the third time. however couldnt guarentee it would start passing next time it was turned on/off. so custards wife eventually took charge, they are getting a new hob over the holidasy and im back on wednesday to fit it. it only cost about £90 so sod looking for spares for an old shed special
