gas valve let by

Had to go and look at a boiler last week due to a smell of gas, got there and found they are smelling it outside from the flue. So instantly thing the gas valve, close the valve at the boiler, stick the gauge on the inlet pressure test point on the valve and sure enough its dropping. Cap boiler off and call vaillant as the boiler is only a year old and under warranty. Get a call from the vaillant engineer today saying there is nothing wrong, only to find out he is testing it for a drop with the gas turned off at the meter and not the boiler and saying he wont replace the gas valve as it isnt dropping that much. It took me about 5 mins to convince him it is 100% at fault.

Well a gas escape is only allowable if not smelt! The Custard smells it then we have to find it and male it safe!

I cant believe I had to talk him into replacing it, he didnt seem overly happy as he didnt have one in the van and was going to have to make another visit to fit it. He actuially said something like "If you are only testing from the inlet of the boiler to the valve it such a small amount of pipework it will make a small leak seem big and it will only be a microscopic amount of gas and nothing to worry about". I was actually shocked and reminded him that no drop was allowed as the valve needs to shut down properly.

Goes to show we can all make up our own mind as to what is or isn't safe! However the regs are wuite solid where a smell is observed
