I replaced a gas valve today on a potty combi 80 and managed to snap the pressure compensation hose fitting on the gas valve

I spoke to potterton and they advised a new valve at £160 odd, I plugged off the compensation hose . Is there any safety issue doing this please ? thanks in advance

i think you have "altered" a gas fitting therefore it is now not fit for purpose, (but remember i dont live in the real world)

Cheers Kirkgas , I was talking to the customer and tightening up the small fitting on the back of the gas valve and it just sheared of. I presume this fitting is some type of compensation hose where bye the gas valve wont work supposedly if its not connected , but the boiler works fine with the hose blanked off , My main concern is that I have left it safe to be honest with you

We both know that we are not allowed to do this unless instructed by the manufacturer

but how did you blank it and what is it for, as per usual you can do some things with no detrement, BUT and there is always a but, can anyoe look at it now and say "thats been altered by an unapproved method and i cant now do............. because its been blanked" so if they go to manufacturer or GSR could you get a slap? if so change the valve i'm afraid, its the only way to keep yourself 100% in the right

i know its a different thing (or is it) but i know people who have broken o/heat stats and linked them out and the appliance "seems" to work

It is a pressure compensation hose that can be found on loads of boilers , Saying that I have never seen one before on a potterton combi. It is a clear hose that goes into the combustion chamber and then into the back of the gas valve, I have blanked the hose off with a plastic bung and to be honest I think it would make sod all difference if it was left open but that is not the case ,So i sealed it off

Why did you have to do this ? why not leave it connected

was it marked vent on the gas vale, it should be connected, it changes the burner pressure slightly I think..

it is a tiny nipple that sits on the back of the gas valve that has to be removed from the old valve which i did but managed to snap it off , I did not notice it being marked vent, I checked the burner pressure and it was fine. I would be more concerned with safety than anything else and want to cover myself thats all ,Thanks for any input

I know exactly what your describing but if you snapped off the connection then it needs replacing with a new valve !!!!!!!!!

It's to compensate for the pressure in the combustion chamber. So that the burner gets a true BP rather than one that is affected by the negative pressure inside the boiler

has to be there for a reason otherwise it wouldnt be there, they wouldnt put it on ,seen it a few times were its kinked and had to be replaced

Yes I agree as has been explained by SimonJohns . I have to get a tool to remove the broken bit out and i still have enough thread left on broken piece, I dont know what the tool is called something like the opposite of a tap and dye set i think

its cos there is a different density of air in the combustion chamber as it is hotter air, so it compensates for that effecting the bp, giving the real bp pressure inside the combustion chamber, this is what i understood its for.

easy out or screw extractor
