Went to a call re: gas leak, transco had been and turned off due to a leak under the floor, I went with an intent on locating the leak and rectifying, if only everything was that easy.

The leak was under a laminated floor newly laid, but the first thing i noticed was a 15mm straight off the meter, 10 metres away from a 7.5kw hob and then 3 metres from a 18kw system boiler, so the dilemma starts,

1) lift the newly fitted laminate trying not to damage, fix the leak and then turn off the gas because of the pipe size
2) fix leak dont say anything

3)tell client that I can fix but the pipework is grossly undersized.

I go with 3 but so not to be seen touting for business I tell the client to ring GSR and ask for their advice.
gave her details of meter, pipe run and size, boiler size and hob size, just so she knows I'm not pulling a fast one.

GSR----I dont know why he's asked you to ring us.

no wonder the cowboy element can get away with it, or was I being tooooo good.

fix the leak, class the undersized pipe as at risk, turn off with the customers permission. balls in thier court.

Sometimes the job would be much easier without custards questioning our professionalism :) Depending on the size of the leak I'd be tempted to connect the whole lot up and check the working pressures just to confirm your reasoning! :)

I have actually re-piped today so the client could have their cooking and heating back, nice people, think that makes a difference. also whilst sliding on my back under floor, found 1/2 soldered joint and boxed in under the boiler was an elbow that had'nt seen any solder at all, tightness was near full drop in 1 minute

i wouldnt touch it at all id explain it needs up sizing and quote for that as a way to remove the leak as system is currently dissed anyway
doing the work and then shutting it of smacks of extortion

Was the undersized pipe effecting the operation of the appliances though, only AR if its effecting appliances

the only way to check this would be to spend 2 hours, cutting access and then under floor fixing leak this is an expense I felt was not needed.

exactly why I went with option 3

Same as me. No one is going to let you fix the leak and then tell them they shouldnt be using it.

Crawling under floors *shiver*

Been some time since I've been there!!! lol .... Good to know you got it sorted stani :)

I was about to say it been a long time for me, but just had another today,(they must but saving them all up) completely knackered in and out of a gap my stomach has trouble getting through but did find this: P1000906.jpg

actually there was around 2'6" of room so I sat for a few minutes to get my breath back and then realised that my pipe slice coupling and even the stop tap were back through that bloody hole 3 floorboards wide x 16" between the joists

That sounds about right , something i have been meaning to do for years is spray my pipe slices with bright green luminous paint as i have spent ages looking in voids for the things only to find them beside me

joke aside ,two of us have been working beside each other only to lose the bloody things in a room neither of us have left , 15 minutes later the things are staring us straight in the face on the window sill lol

Don't worry it just gets worse as you get older

you know you are getting old when you buy 2 pipe slices so you can always find at least one of them, and then lose both of them and find them 1/2 hour later in your pocket

Hahaha this has happend to me today (well it happens all the time) must be a pipe slices trick
