Has anyone heard of Gastec, they are a private Gas training company based in Milton Keynes, they look and sound good but i was wondering if anyone has had any dealings with them good or bad.

Im currently with an engineering firm doing bits and pieces towards my portfolio and my boss has advised that a gas course such as this is the best way to go as opposed to going to night school 2 nights a week over a 12 month period as the distance is to great any way.

What are the odds of finding work at the end throughout the UK (im prepared to move on a temp or perm basis). There seems to be a lot of gas work about, does anyone buy that "Britian's short of gas engineers" or is that just a misrepresentation by the government as usual?

Thanks in advance for any replies fellas.:)

there is no shortage at all and the problem being finding someone who will want a newly qualified guy doing their gaswork

Heinz, I advertised for a new engineer last October. In one week I had 83 applicants. 90% of which had no experience!
Every CV read the same, 'I have been doing a fast track etc'.

I did actually take on a lad with very little experience and he does gas checks for me and probably will for quite some time because he can't do anything else.

His level of skill is very low and he will be on low pay reflecting that for some time. It is not a problem for him because he is a single lad with very little outgoings.

But if your position is different, I don't know what jobs you will get.

There is just the usual amount of work about but it is being chased by more and more engineers most of whom don't know their rse from their elbow. Prices are dropping as most are just trying to survive.
There is certainly not a shortage of engineers. There has been far too many fast trackers and on top of all the laid off site guys, too many are chasing the work.

Don't be taken in by the hype of the big money. It isn't there.
Realistically as a newly qualified with no experience you would be lucky to get 20K (probably nearer 15) IF you can find someone to take you on. Most time served guys average around 25 - 30K. Go SE with no experience and you will struggle severely.

Think carefully before spending your money. It is not the road to riches and career satisfaction it is made out to be.

all of the above is all too true the road to riches is not through fast tracking
some do make it but a lot fall by the wayside
