It's been a while... ;)

Have you ever had one of the days were you turn up to something and you just think 'What the hell?'

I've just been to see a 'water cylinder making a funny noise'.

It took me a second to realise I was looking at an unvented cylinder because the installation just looked wrong. Now I don't do solar heating so have absolutely no experience of these installations, but this thing looked so badly installed that I started to doubt my own knowledge.

There was no tundish, no PRV, no filter. But what was really bizarre is that the hot water draw off went straight to an F&E tank. The system did work until recently but I'm damned if I know how.

I've gone through Gledhill's twin coil catalogue and just can't find a single cylinder where this system would work.

I have, as you can imagine, told the customer to get a solar specialist in, but I'm wondering what on earth I've missed.

That has DIY written all over it, it sounds like a accident waiting to happen, I hope not !

We maintain McCarthy and Stone retirement complex's which have Gledhill stuff in them
mainly pulse coil units. Dont get involved, the parts only come from Gledhill in Blackpool
and are so expensive its not worth it. They have the whole thing sewn up with a fleet of
vans on the road maintaining the rubbish.

Sorry, I really, really should have taken some pictures!

I had a call from the poor lady, who now has no hot water or heating, earlier today - she can't find anyone who will touch it and the original company that installed the system (yes, it was professionally installed) told her that they only have one engineer now who works on these 'old' cylinders so they can't send someone for two weeks.
