i am asking yet another gas question

my question is i am currently going through 1st year of 6189 which is the new level 2 cert that came in this year i have alot of experiance with plumbing beforehand fitting kitchen and bathrooms and being a general plumber sort of speak and now my employer has told me to go for my gas. i have basically a split week one half kitchens and bathrooms and another half plumbing and heating with another gsr person

my question is is it right that all i have to do is get my portfolio and complete it and then learn all i need for the exams like my college said ?and do u only have to be gas safe registered to sign off on a portfolio ? for each task i mean ?

and how many installs etc is needed for the portfolio ?

anybody recomend any manuals or books ? heard trelor is a good book.

all help is wanted so if anybody could point me in the right path

many thanks

You can't do any gas related work. You need to be supervised by competent gas safe registered person. So is not like a NVQ where you could do the job and get it signed off by other qualified plumber. Gas is more dangerous therefore it needs to be supervised during training. I would personally go to college for 1 day a week and you can work on your gas experience rest of the week. My course lasted 34 weeks but due to busy schedule, I was able to finish month early , so I just did my portfolio (13 jobs) and passed assessment. If you are doing cookers and gas fires then this might be more jobs on portfolio, but I will do them extra, so don't need to produce portfolio for these 2 appliances. All learning material I was given in the college (vipre and corgi books). This is how I've done it, just waiting for my Logic cert to come through so I can register on Gas safe :)

Btw, it is not a cheap course, so be prepared :/

Good luck mate

hello and :welcome:to the forum.

Treloar is good reading, easy to follow or as you say corgi/viper.
what you will need for your portfolio will depend on the course you are doing and the centre you learn at.
Best to speak to them to get the correct answer.
seems obvious, but the gas safe engineer that signs any work for your portfolio will need to be qualified for those areas or it wont count.

yer the college im at is legit run by an arm of the local council. its just the guys there seem to be willing to take me on as a catogory 2 applicant but when it comes to asking them exact stuff or questions there busy etc so its easier to ask on here then to go in and book on. i also plan to buy a trelor and corgi then read up alot to be pretty good on the theory then know the stuff to learn the practical onsite. i do get to see the onsite and could easily get my hands on it like per job i could get quite a few of the tasks done but its knowing the theory.

all a learning curve. but do i just complete my portfolio then sit the relevant exams ??

many thanks
