hi guys,

looking for some advice please

my mate who is gas safe register under the company he works for 3 years is looking to get his own gas safe number so he can do gas jobs outside of work. Is this possible to do and if so what does he need to do this? also is there anyone that does this on this forum that would speak to me an offer further advice please

reason being guys is that I myself was working for a company that let me go on a gas course, cut a long story short, they made me redundant and im no longer able to complete my portfolio. So basically ive asked my mate to get his own gassafe number which i will pay for in return for him helping me complete my portfolio. He wants his own number anyway but wasnt sure if you can have a company gas safe number and also a private gas safe number at the same time

i would really appreciate your advice

You can do it my mate does. I don't think some firms like it but they can not stop you from getting it. To get it you just have to apply online and pay subscription.

what do you mean mate, they dont like it?? why not? and how would they know you if he does get his own number

Some firms just don't like you having your own registration they see it as competition I suppose, I'm not sure how they would find out though if he didn't tell them

Oh no, apart from possibly or potentially.........pinching hard earned customers, using the firms van, equipment, diesel, materials etc etc not to mention maybe 'squeezing in' the odd pj in the working day, the odd dodgy 'sickie' etc, undercutting for 'cash', no i'm sure they wont mind!!

Before I started working for myself the two firms I worked for previously did not like you to have your own gas safe and I can understand why but surely they cannot stop you getting it if you wanted it. I got my gas safe whilst I was still at my old job as back up incase the firm went under (which it did) and my managers did not like it one but, but I just told them I was covering myself incase the worse happened

all you need to do to sort a second number is phone GSR and pay them £428 (roughly half every yr after that) a company can stop you having a second independant number if it is in your contract, they cannot stop you doing it but if you breach the terms of your contract you will almost certainly get bumped if they find out, which is more than likely at some point. firms dont like it as they expect you to steal their stuff and customers,

Also if you are gonna work under your own number make sure you have insurance

It also makes sense to hold your own number it means that the firm cant push you around if you decide that you are not happy with something.

i think every one should be registered in their own right it would make every operative responsible for their own work i also think every one should pay the same registration fees at present large companies get a huge discount per operative compared to a one man band

i dont think firms get a discount, every firm pays a set fee to register the business incl 1 engineer, then a set fee per extra engineer, so a new one man band will pay £428 to register, a 2 man company pays £428 plus £67 and a company with 100 men pay £428 plus 99 x £67 so how is that a discount?
every engineer is technically registered in their own right so it would only add to the individuals cost ad admin
