Hi guys,

been to to look at a glowworm 65-80 conventional boiler. Long story short it's spewing out co at 1300ppm before I got scared and removed my analyser in case it damaged it.

the boiler needs one heck of a good clean and a few parts as follows

sight glass
sight glass gasket
combustion cover seal
internal insulation panels

ive had a word with various plumber merchants only to be told I can only get hold of the sight glass and nothing else. I'm assuming I'm ok to use glass rope for the combustion cover seal, what can I use for the sight glass gasket? Also I know you can buy sheets of insulation from plumb centre so I would be able to cut them down to size. Am I ok doing this?

also I believe this boiler contains asbestos, any idea where?

a manual for it too would be great? Hop I'm not asking too much

I would be quoting for a new boiler. If the boiler contains asbestos it could be in the insulation panels, sealing rope etc. Not worth the risk. Besides I would only be fitting genuine parts into the boiler.

As above. ID, isolate and quote for new boiler. You repair this now, what else will fail in the next few months? Throwing good money after bad IMO.

I agree what others are saying, but its all very well saying you need a new boiler, but if elderly people have they got the funds to have it done, maybe they qualify for a freebee

Thats exactly the issue, they are old, not much money and have no heating or hot water. They aLeo don't think they would qualify for a grant.

Its a bit silly that just because some basic parts are obsolete that the whole boiler is condemned. Especially when other items to the same spec could be use. If I were to ring glowworm and ask if it's ok to do what I'm thinking of doing, would they be able to approve it or would they say it's non approved parts. Want to stay above board and legal but the heart strings are being pulled. If it has to stay off then fine but if there a way around this safely I would love to know.

anyone know the kW rating of this appliance so I can price up a replacement in the mean time? Any recommendations as to which boiler would replace it nicely

thanks in advance

Between 19 & 24 Kw (65 to 80,000 btu) But its not just a case of replacing boiler ! is it gravity, what about other controls / cylinder ect.
these sort of jobs can be quite costly, give boiler a good clean, as long as burner pressure , flame picture ok and not spilling should be ok, remember when these boilers were made analysers were not used, have you done a smoke test on boiler ? Old boilers use some common sense

Haha, I didn't know the 65-80 meant the btu rating, hence why I wanted the mi. the boiler is older than me it needs parts mate so can't just clean it and leave it as it is

Well if you cant get parts you'll have to close it down, are they certain that they cant get help with free replacement ??

Beesley whilst I commend you for trying your best on this one unfortunately mate there comes a point where there's nothing more you can do. If you can't get the parts for the boiler you can't just use other bits to get it going. And if they contain asbestos then you really should walk away from it. I'm sure they can afford to replace and if they can't then the family will have to step up. Don't leave yourself open mate because if something goes pears shaped on a make do and mend repair they will hang you out to dry.
