Hi folks, this is my 1st post here so please be gentle as I know nothing about boilers (well not the gas type anyway 😀)

I have an old 45 60b that has been playing up for a year or so , as soon as I put it on h/w & c/h the pilot light go's out.I could live with this as it still gave me hot water and I have a wood burner and open fire for warmth.
A couple of days ago it started going out on h/w only so I called out a engineer who serviced it and said it would be fine now, which it was untill getting home from work tonight.
Now as soon as I relight it and turn it up the pilot go's out 😡

I dont want to spend a fortune as I am waiting for my remortgage to come through and I am getting the whole system replaced in the new year.
Any ideas how I can keep the old boiler working for a few months ?

If anyone local can do it for me for pound notes than that would be great.

Thanks,
Jon.

Will not the gas plumber come back who serviced it ? could just need a slight adjustment or pilot jet re-cleaned again. they can be very temperamental due to age, give him a ring

imho

Hi,
Call Back your engineer, you've paid him. Pressumably you told him about the pilot prob.
He should have removed the pilot & cleaned it,if it's standard pilot injector feed 5amp fuse wire thro' to clean, or if on your boiler the pilot has a sleeve running from the injector to the pilot burner.[ small air hole inside must be clear] awkward job, just bend the tip of a pin to clean.
Also worth changing the T/couple, you'll prob have to pay for that!
There's other things, no obstructions around flue terminal also check inner flue is sealed.
At the end of the day, it's old & could be a fading gas valve.... Obsolete.
Honest it's worth having a chat with him & he should take another look.

Thanks guys , I have been trying to get in touch with the lad who came but have had no reply yet, he is a friend of my nephews (both new out of there time and gas safe registered) I guess I need an old school gas fitter that has experience with this old relic 🙂

The thing that really annoys me is that I work on Ruston gas turbines and all sorts of machinery involved with giving us the gas we get to our houses

He should really come back . If he is newly qualified he will have just come off the 'safety device rig' and should know exactly how to sort it !

Toddy, am sure he will if I can get in touch with him. He is newly registered gas afe as my nephew is (nephew has just become a father for the 1st time so he is a little busy lol)
Would he really know about old boilers like this as he is only just qualified ??

Absolutely ! It is a simple TC and pilot thats very basic stuff. He simply has to logically follow through its operation. Make sure the gas cock is fully open as well !
If they can not sort this then they should not have qualified to be blunt .
Thinking about it , does the spacesaver have a TC ? Bugger am gonna have to check now

Erm sorry,,, TC ??😱 If anyone can send me pictures of what I should be looking at that might help...😱

Sorry Jon TC = Thermocouple .
The fan flued spacesaver does not have one.
I take it your pilot flame is normally visible through the viewing window when the main flame is out

Thanks Toddy, as for the pilot flame, that go's out as well as the main flame but yes it is the one you can see through the window.

If the pilot is normally there then yes it is a simple fix , can be a fiddle but is simple, get them back and show them these posts it will do them no harm what so ever, in fact they will benefit from it😉

Thanks again mate, yes the pilot light is there but go's out as soon as I turn the h/w stat up so the burner ignites, then within a few seconds the burner and pilot light go's out.

Latest news, my nephew came today with a new thermo coupling, fitted that and it lit ok as usual but went out within a few minutes , the flame wasnt touching the thermo coupling so we took the gas jet out and it looked blocked, I blew it out with my compressor but it still didnt look clear, it looks like there is a very fine mesh filter over the hole , is that right?
Gave it a clean with a solvent cleaner and blew it out again, re-fitted but still the same.
Hes getting a new gas jet tomorrow so hopefully that will sort it.
Your thoughts please.

Jon.

You need really fine wire to clean the jet . The new jet will sort it and nephew will have learned a bit 🙂 Worth getting him to blow out the bundy tube before fitting new jet.

if he is still about put it under tap,wet it and blow through, should clear any silt blockage inside nozzle

do not like to be contrary but always find best not use wire or a pin on jets or nozzles to clean

Puddle , get youself a set of injector wires, I got some from an instrument mechanic . Cant find any to buy though , Im sure BG guys used to have them

totally agree i second that

Thnaks again guys. I feel really guilty as he has just become a father for the 1st time and he is coming here after work (self employed at 21 y/o) .

So should it look like it has a fine mesh over the hole? We tried to clear the hole with a set of acetylene nozzle cleaners but the smallest one seemed to big ?
Bundy tube? is that the small bore pipe that supplys the gas to the jet?

As you say guys its good lessons learnt for him and he did say he enjoys working on the older stuff as I guess he did his training with all sorts of pcb's and didgital watsits 😀

Hi did the engineer check the gas working pressure i have had a boiler once that when the main burner come on the pressure was that low the flame lifted from the pilot .
