Hi huge Folks, please advise if you can, I have a glow worm boiler running a huge C/H system, The house is V.Cold and the boiler almost never stops running when switched on, I guess we have 20 rads counting the doubles a singles. These are huge old style rads (no Fins on back).

Because the boiler never cuts out we are consuming about £30/£40 of gas a week. using it 6/7 hours a day there is one 2 port diverter valve on until the boiler heating flow.

The H/water flow is open(no Diverter Valve) and no Cylinder Stat either, so this side must be wild calling for heat until the boiler stat cuts out.

Timer is a Randal 102

Can I make this system more efficient - perhaps making it an s plan by adding another Divert valve to hot water -is the boiler suitable for s plan? any other suggestions greatly appreciated
Thanks
Steve

unfortunatly thats the price of heating a large property these days especially using an old inefficent boiler
if the house is cold even with it on adding valves and stats isnt going to make much difference if its not reaching temp the valves will never shut
there may be some saving from the cylinder stat but i would think it would be minimal you realy need the system updating solar is popular with large properties as are heat pumps of various kinds
draught proofing and insulation are going to be important as well

TRV,s fitted ? Close down the rooms you don,t use so much or its time to start spending !

Hi all,
Thanks for your welcome to the forum and your replies to my first post, greatly appreciated !!

Whatever the solution, I am broke and need to the get tools out to fix myself but not sure where to start, so you help and advice is a real boon !!

Ive Just been on the sedbuk site and their calculator says my house needs a 26.1 Kw boiler, does anyone know how many KW my Glow-worm space saver 75 produces ?

May be a system flush (not done in 20years) might help heat output? or not ?
if so what chemical is best to use for this?

Please advise if you can,
thanks for your help,
Steve

Hi all
do you know if space saver 75 is suitable for S plan set up, with 2 x 2 port valves one on heat one on H/water flow.

The reason I ask is that I have read somewhere that when shutting down, some boilers have a short over-run (if both valves are shut, the boiler will blow thru 22mm vent until over-run switches off also. But it is poss to shut the over run off for fitting s plan,? any one know how?

Pls help if you can
thanks steve

Hi all

You can fit two motorised valves to system/boiler but you will have to put in by pass pipework so when both valves are closed the pump over run can operate through it,plenty of drawings at line of set up

If at present boiler not heating house and all cold ,you may as well reduce area you live in for now until cold snap ends, heat less rooms and hopefully the ones you heat will reach a acceptable level, pointless having boiler on all the time to keep you cold

Not sure what out put the glowworm 75 is,however usually the 75 would be 75,000 btu which would make it 21.97 k/w

you need to define the problem before you start anything if the existing rads are getting hot but not heating the rooms then the rads are to small
if the rads are not getting hot then either the system is sludged or the boilers not big enough shut half the rads and see if they get hot if yes then the boilers to small if no theres something wrong with circulation so then a powerflush is needed
you may have to fit a valve to the cylinder to get a true picture as its possible the cylinder is taking to much of the flow
so fit another zone valve cylinder stat and ballancing valve on the cylinder first

Thanks Steve

Some great advice and generally the way I was thinking
But you have focussed my thoughts with useful specific 'things to do'

Thanks for your help- it's much appreciated,
Regards
Steve
