Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you could give me some help/suggestions to solve the following problem i have:

I have a conventional boiler as per title, i have a been having problems with hot water to my taps or lack of it!! My boiler works fine and heats radiators but there is only a small trickle comming out both hot taps in my kitchen/bathroom?? Now i do have some air in the system which i have previously bleed but it made no difference to water supply/pressure. I was wondering if it was one of the mechanical valves that were faulty (only found one - should there be 2x??), as i have checked the pump and it is working fine.

Other than that i was thinking it might be air trapped in my copper cylinder as i dont seem to have a manual air vent to release any trapped air, but again being a complete novice i'm not too sure if that would effect water to taps??

Any suggestions are welcome & Thank you in advance....

Regards,

Scott.

Has this happened recently? Have you drained anything down? has the mains water pressure been low?

is it every tap or just some?
could be trapped air
could be a blockage, insulation in the cold feed tank etc
could be scale build up in the feed from cold water tank to hot water cylinder, etc etc

Hi Croppie, no it has been like this for some time. The last time the system was draind was a year ago when i had the boiler serviced, as i had some air trapped in the system, which has been happening on/off since then.

My mains pressure is not low....

HI Simon,

I only have the 2x taps, and both down to a trickle....

your boiler circuit and hot water circuit aren't connected.

Not being funny mate but reading your posts I think you're going to have to seriously consider calling a plumber in!

What does your hot water cylinder look like? Is it copper with a red plastic lagging? Is it lagged with a tight foam lagging? Or is it a white metal cyinder?

Croppie,

It's copper with tight foam lagging c/w Honeywell emersor connected at bottom of tank

Let's put it this way Robb, your pressurised heating circuit from your boiler only heats your water through a coil inside the hot water cylinder. Your heating water and hot water should never come into direct contact with each other. We've now ruled out your boiler, repressurising the system and the controls.

You'll have a large cold water storage tank in the loft. Go make sure it's full of water. Then, using a torch, make sure there is nothing inside the tank blocking the the two water outlets at the bottom of the tank. Also check any valves are fully open that are up there and attached to this tank.

Thanks Croppie,

I had an incline my boiler was not the problem, and was hoping it may be something more straight forward. I'll check on what you have advised.

Here is the easiest fix for you assuming you are in a relatively old house (there are other easier ways to do this but take too long to explain).
If your washing machine has a hot and cold fill, pull your machine out. Turn off the red and blue valves. Disconnect the hoses and use one hose to connect between the red and blue valves. Turn both vales on for about 30 secs to a minute then close them Open your taps and problem fixed.
If you have a conscience, drop a pound in the next charity box you see for doing a re-trainer out of a half shift.
