Bunker

Noisey RDB.
I offered custard a new motor or to rebuild old one, they opted for a new one. That was Friday.
Saturday they called as a bad smell of oil but I didnt get the message until Sunday as I was in Wales. Good custards so I whizzed over on Sunday and found pump leaking, looked like HP outlet. Fettled around for an hour and thought Id got it.
Call today, still leaking. Pish.
Went back today spent an hour fettling including new hp line (sometimes the brazing cracks), burner on/off/ 90 degrees/ 180 degrees, etc etc hurrah no drip.....

drip..

aaaarrrrggghhhh

Right no more messing about, new pump.

no drips.

no money.

No idea where it was leaking from, very unsatisfactory.

Still, I am a hero and I did get a signed copy of his book on Nelson (naval not mandela)

Some days I wish I hadnt answered the phone.

Wonder did you check if the pump was leaking oil at the spindle when it's working? Then the kerosine wrecks the motor bearing.
Kerosine is so hard to trace leaks & I use a mirror, torch & dry the area first to see if I find the leak.

Yes thats the funny thing, as you say its usually kero that disolves the grease ion the bearings but you usually see the tell tales of that. When I ws back there I took the pump off expecting to find it around the stem but didnt.
I forgot to mention that, sitting cross legged on the floor like a school child, I managed to empty a pump full of kero onto my pull-on boot which soaked through the elastic (chelsea boot style) through onto my sock. Now my boot schtinks and I am half a pair of socks down.
Was truly a marvelous job.

One of our lads rang me yesterday. Commissioning a new RL70, oil pyshing out the casing immediately on start up.

He checked all the nozzle pipework etc.

"Mate," I said, "Pump's shot."

Riello coming out tomorrow apparently.
