Hello everyone.

I've had (what I thought was) a groaning boiler for a year or so. It's been getting progressively worse and so I decided to have a now boiler fitted yesterday. As part of the installation, the system was flushed, etc.

I was hoping that the new boiler would sort the problem and stop complaints from my neighbours!

However, I'm dismayed to find that the intermittent noise is STILL occurring!

It's a low groan that lasts about 2 seconds and I get around 7 of them, one after the other, every few hours or so.

Before I lose it and take a sledgehammer to the whole lot, do any of you kind souls have any ideas or theories as to the cause?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tim

tell us more about your system.

Is it a combi, or does it have a separate cylinder for hot water?

Is it open vented (roof tank(s) in loft) or sealed system?

Does the groaning co-incide with any specific boiler operation ?

Do you have a poltergeist in the house?

:welcome: to the forum Tim :) Could be anything from a faulty valve to creaking floorboards to be honest. 1st thing jumped to my mind was TRV's on the wrong side? That's just a guess though.... Best get someone in :)

Hi Ray

It's a brand new Ideal Logic+ condensing combi-boiler that I had fitted yesterday. No roof tank in loft.

As I said, I really hoped it would fix the problem... but no such luck.

Hi Tim welcome your post is really great and I am sure you will get loads of answers from
UKPF - I too will have a think - my first thought is do you live by the sea ? CHK

Are you absolutely sure its you ? malfunctioning siphons/inlet valves on cisterns can produce
the best groaning noise ever. It hits the resonance frequency of the pipework in yourhouse
and others -

I used to know the toilet habits of a neighbour years ago - 05.00 am before work etc
cause the whole building vibrated - let us know :xmas: CHK

Ray has a huge poltergeist in his warehouse which is why someone else opens up and
closes each day !

I hope you didn't buy it JUST to fix the noise issue tim? Does the noise seem to originate from the boiler or elsewhere in the house?

No, the old boiler had been here for about 20 years and it was time for a change, I think,

Just a thought to eliminate trv opening and closing making the noise you could take the heads off all of them so they all stay open and see if this stops the noise. If it does put one back at a time till the noise reoccurs to find out which one is playing up. That is if it is the trv's.

Also you said this started occurring a year ago, did you notice the noise during the summer when heating would be off? Was the previous boiler a combi as well or was the system converted? Have any work done in the months leading up to when you first heard the noise ? Sorry for all the questions just trying to get a bit of background on the problem.
