I have a customer who has a steel header tank which is starting to go in the corners. However it is built into the roof and there is no way getting it in or out without taking part of the roof off and hiring a crane. I have heard that there are companies who specialise in lining such tanks in situ with fibreglass but I can't find anyone in the Yorkshire area. Has anyone had this done or knows anywhere that has, and does anyone know a contractor? It is a large tank, about 2m x 1.5m x 1m. Another consideration is that it is in a hotel and as such it would have to be done in a very short space of time.

Hi. There are people who would line such a cistern (boat building industry is a good source) but where conections exit the cistern any leaks that allow water to get between the skin and the cistern would be difficult to avoid and identify in the short term. Have you considered braithwait cistern panels. They are 900 mm or 1 m square panels that bolt together forming a cistern to any size you require. With modern cutting equipment, cutting up an existing cistern and removing is not difficult. Good Luck

Is it not possible to install another CWSC somewhere else in the roof space and leave the leaker in situ.

As for lining it, like JUSTLEAD said the problem lies with reconnecting the supplies and makeing them 100% watertight for the foreseeable future,

It is not that unusual to take a bit of roof off and crane in a new cistern,

I am not being facetious but I have just had an "thinking outside the box" moment

Why not stick a pond liner in it and extend the service pipes over the rim and simply syphon the water, it would necessitate providing a controllable mains water connection to the service pipes to prime them.

Polish Plumbers eat your heart out...

thats a great bit of thinking in or out of the box. If the situation is that difficult i would definatly consider that you could even fit a filling loop to each down service somewhere lower to make it easy to refill if the syphon was lost at any time
overflow and ballvalve could be through existing holes and the liner

why not get rid of it altogether, put in a pressure vessel and convert it into a pressure system, cheaper than taking the bloomin roof off.

Hi Blokey
WHPES was not describing a header tank the clue in his post was the size of the
item.

The tank feeds a large calorifier on the ground floor of the hotel, which feeds the rooms, the kitchen and the services. The rooms are fitted with power showers and if all the guests get up at the same time, the demand is large so a smaller tank is not an option.

I had thought of a pressure vessel but again the issue is the size and there is really nowhere for it to go unless they build an outhouse for it. I will investigate and ask my builder how much that would cost. It may be an easier option in the long term. However I am sure that a pressure vessel that size won't come cheap!

I think I can get the inlets and outlets off OK, which could be reconnected and make a good seal after lining.

I have seen a pond liner being used for a tank in a pig shed, which if this leaked wouldn't be too much of a problem, but for a hotel, I'd rather not.

I will look at the Braithwaite cistern.

Forget about pressure vessel unless by that you mean install a say 500gall (22000 litre)
tank at ground or basement level and pump it.

You will never satisfy the demands of that building without a incorporating a storage vessel.

Reline the system Water storage tank relining and refurbishment: Tank Reline. Used them before, great products for this kind of thing.

cut it into bits with a recipricating saw, link up 2,3,4 smaller tanks for the same capacity?
