Hi

New to the forum, good site!

Recently bought an ex authority place with an ancient glowworm 45/2 back boiler. Just got a quote from the firm that are recommended by the council and offer their annual service contracts. Inspired by the scrappage scheme and the orange flame & funny smell the current boiler is giving off!

I got a quote to disconnect the old back boiler, remove the hwt and locate the new boiler in the airing cupboard in the hwt location (mounted on an external wall) install two new rads and a new gas pipe to the boiler (as the old is not large enough diameter apparently). They are also fitting isolating valves for a new rad location in the future, but not installing.

The boiler they have quoted is a worcesterbosch greenstar 30.

All in price of £2558 + vat.

I think thats a little expensive. I also question if the boiler needs a new gas pipe? can anyone comment on the general price and gas pipe issue?

sounds 500 quid ott to me, but who knows without seeing the job. if the company is recommended by the council al least you a good comeback and peace of mind. probably worth paying the extra 500 for.

does that include a powerflush??? i would've thought the old system would be full of crap!

Sorry that does include a flush and inhibator.

I know its hard to say without seeing the property. Its a 2 bed masionette top floor (1st flr). Solid walls throughout but has the loft space for all pipework etc inc the new gas pipe. The gas pipe does have to run a long way, from g/f entrance up the external wall, into the loft space and about 12m run across and then down to the new boiler location.

Funny thing is I worked for that authority only 6 months ago as a QS consultant. I know how much they get complete installs from them for and it is not much more, although the boiler might not be the same and the gas pipe run would be extra. I did explain working for them to the estimator that visited hoping he wouldnt take me for a mug.

Any idea how much the gas pipe run would cost? more importantly is it needed?

well if you are havin a 30cdi which is a 30kw boiler and by the sounds of it it's quite a way from the gas meter i would say the gas pipe would need to be in 28mm at least and the price of the 28mm is £100 for 15m on screwfix. so i think yes it is needed, but i would question the need for such a big boiler for a 2 bed flat,i would look at a 28i...that would be more than enough i would've thought.
but like migo said it's hard to say without seeing the job.

There is a gas pipe to the old boiler within 1 metre of the new location. Surely the old pipe would be man enough for the job as its provided gas to the old boiler over the same run?

Would that worcester boiler require a bigger feed than the minimum feed for a glowworm 45/2?

what size pipe is the old feed to the glow worm? and how far from the meter is it and how many other gas appliances do you have?
the newer boilers demand for gas is alot higher than the old boilers to work efficiently/correctly.

Your old glow worm was a heat only boiler, your new one is a combi! When you turn your hot tap on you use alot of gas. Be thankful that they have picked up that it needs a bigger diameter gas supply ( it does ) probably 28mm which is expensive. If the council use them at least you have peace of mind and they will charge you more than they do the council because the council throw them a little more work than you will .

The new boiler WILL need at least a 22mm gas supply, but if such a long run as you say may need 28mm supply. The old glowworm back boiler will have a 15mm supply. The price sounds good to me. Why not get British Gas around for a quote? Then you will see its a good quote.

The reason I question the price is my QS nature I suppose. I will get quotes from other contractors but the first one only arrived today hence my questioning it.

I fully understand that I wont be giving them much work, at all. However I also know how much they can and do do work for!

that quote is about right depending on location def right for london and worcester insist on 22mm supply for their combi

sounds like a good price to me and yes you definatly need a new gas pipemore important is the existing one which you say is orange turn it off or you might not live to see the new boiler

thats a good price.

especially as its off a recommended company.

break it down

considering you could pay up to 300 for the gas to be run from the front of a normal sized house to the airing cupboard normally at the back.
flush and removal of boiler could be anything up to 400
changing 2 rads 250
fit new boiler run condense and electrics 6-700

thats not taking into account the rad and boiler price.

may get it cheaper off a non vat reg company but doubt it.

id accept that price matey

seems like a good deal to me.if anyone says the gas pipe doesnt need changing then there most likely wrong. as mentioned earlier all combis demand a better flow of gas. they will do work cheaper for the council as they got continuity of work. if you were in there position it would no doubt be the same. remember
the cheapest quote is not neccesarily the best there needs to be an element of workmanship about it.
