Hello to all plumbing-minded folk. Thought I would join for a purely selfish reason: I'd like to understand my boiler and heating system better, and learn how to carry out some basic maintenance and repairs myself all without doing anything dangerous!

I am a reasonably expeienced DIYer and home mechanic but haven't touched anything to do with gas or heating, unless you count painting the radiators... :)

British Gas recently condemned my Vokera Excel 80SP boiler for a faulty flue design - it uses a horizontal flue but this has been found to slope back to the boiler allowing water (ie melted snow) to run back onto the fan, seizing it eventually, and it also lacks any intermediate supports in its 2.5 metre length. Not only this but the external part of the flue is too short and the over-pressure discharge pipe discharges directly over my back door.

Small jobs if you know how, which I don't yet. So ask the experts! :D

Hi

Welcome to the forums TB7,hope you find interesting

However unfortunately to work on the flueing system of your boiler you are required to be gas registered

Sorry but it is for your own safety
