Help! Sealing a waste pipe

Apologies for the basic question but what would I use to seal the following [attached]?

We've had drips coming from our bath for the last few weeks and haven't been able to identify the source. Last night I struck pay-dirt.

As above, remove it, clean all old gunk off and silicone it back in

Most of the time they are.

The top will probably be screwed through to the bottom but there will probably be a lot of sealant between the top and the bath and between the bottom and the bath. In theory they should seal with the rubber gaskets but they nearly always need sealant as well. You might need a bit of patience and a Stanley knife to get it off.

Looks likes it's been "fixed" before, might be worth replacing entirely if the rubber gasket has perished.

You're right a new trap only costs a couple of quid.

Go for McAlpine or Polypipe IMO never worth buying cheap traps or pan connectors for that matter.

If you go to buy a new one, good idea, it is a bath waste you need (not a trap).

I use good quality sanitary silicone sealant, Nemesis, Dow 781, Everflex 500 white or clear, you'll need paper nearby at least or ideally Wonder/Soudal/Tygis Wipes.

Make sure you make a good CONTINUOUS bead around both sides of the fitting, not too much and not to little - any gap and the water WILL get through.

Sorry to disagree with my esteemed colleagues.

I would NOT use silicone. Use Plumbers Mait.

It does not rely on 'solidifying' so is far more flexible than silicone and accommodates far more movement through temp variation because it 'self heals'.

You know W, I don't care Oddly, what has always truly driven me is to do the best job I can under the circumstances. All too often silicone can be slightly old or the surfaces slightly contaminated. With Plumbers mate neither of those things matter a jot. I never once had a call back for a waste I'd PM'd in but had a couple that were siliconed. One three times before I discovered it was contaminated and had to be chemically cleaned before the bl00dy silicone would seal to both surfaces. Never again

Not saying you are wrong mate. Just stating manufacturers spec.
