Hi,
I live in Minnesota and purchased a house built in 1968 last year. The house moved to city water but originally had a well water system. The well has subsequently been used for lawn watering.
I had to demo the expansion tank because it was too close to the electrical panel. The well system has a 1" poly pipe coming through the basement walls, about 4 ft below grade. Possibly as part of that system, there was a second 3/4" poly pipe going through the basement floor. This second 3/4" pipe is my subject of this thread. The pipe was plugged with a homemade 3/4" plug and it wasn't connect to any part of the well system, although there was a valve that seems like it could have been attached at one point.
The pipe was stubbed up about 12" above the floor and when I took the plug out, I had a gush of water come out. The water continued to come out although at a lower pressure and water ceased to flow after I added another 8" of water line above the floor.
My first question is : what was this for? The original water lines for the house are copper and run along the basement ceiling. If it was a pipe for outside water, why didn't they take it through the walls and if it was a pipe for outside water which was abandoned why does it now have ground water coming into it?
The second and main question is, how do I permanent seal it off so I don't have a 12" poly pipe stubbed up in my basement?
Thanks,
Jeff
