After being made redundant for the 2nd time in a year. I have finally decided to take a different career path and try to become a plumber. I cant get my head around how difficult It is to want to learn. I went along to my local college to try and get on a course. I cannot do anything unless im on an apprentership. This i dont mind. But looking at it in depth it seems that unless you are under 24 years old then there is little chance of someone taking you on. Can anyone offer any advice on how i could get round this without paying lots of money. Am i able to work as a volunteer with a plumber and pay to be on a course at the same time. I have no idea. Help needed

Your screwed mate,

Your quite right your too old to be of any use to a college as there is no funding for you, so, you have to stump up the cash.

If you go privately and get the quals that way your screwed again, no one will recognise your qualifications because you will be known in the industry as 'fast track' So, no one will employ you.

You then have to set up on your own in a flooded market, this is a very expensive industry to set yourself up in, van, liability insurance etc etc.

No-one will want to take you on if your a fast tracker because why train the competition.

Theres been loads of threads done on this subject, I've done a few (being a fast tracker) have a flick through and see what you find.

There was one here a few days ago, along the lines of how long it takes to become a full time, self employed plumber, very interesting reading.

Think iam screwed cant seemed to get any way round it.

There is no way round it, even if you can find someone to take you on as an apprentice you'll still (probably) have to pay for the college course.

If your the right side of 24 or on benefit you'll stand a chance.

If you're made redundant and on benefits you SHOULD be able to get a fully funded course at college, not fast track but the old fashioned college. Level 2 at least.

I am in Berkshire and I work but I get funding for the course as it is my 1st C&G Level 2. I paid for the exams and college enrolment, £130 odd. The chaps who are unemployed get it all free.

Check in you area with the college, if you have savings, as benefits are means tested you may not qualify but if it is your 1st Level 2 course no matter whether you have plenty money in the bank it's free (well funded anyway).

Make a few calls and good luck.

this has allways been a difficult industry to get in to more hurdles than the grand national and the end result is its not really the job you thought it was loads of money and dead easy quite the oppisit is true but if you want to do it mate go for it and good luck its deffo better than a lot of jobs
