I have just finished my apprenticeship and gained my NVQ Level 2 qualification. I have picked up some private work which I'm struggling to price up as I have never had to do it before and I was wondering if someone could help me.

Basically the job is an old school building which roughly is about the size of a 5 bedroom house. Thieves have got in over the summer and taken every bit of copper pipe that was in place.. It's my job to go in and replace it all.. There are 13 radiators, 6 basins and 3 wc's all of which are still in place with valves, taps and plastic fittings. The customer is going to get all the materials as she works in a local plumbing merchants so I'll be just getting paid for the work I do. Trouble is I don't have a clue how much I should be charging can anyone help? Thank you

How long do you think it will take
What will you charge on hourly rate
If its all pushfit then it will be very quick to fit and reclip.
Best of luck.

The way I price my labour is that I discount my hourly rate if I have a day's work or more, and I discount my day rate if I the job is a week's worth or more. Start with what you would like to earn per hour, work out an estimate time of work (2 days?) then see what the total looks like and work from there.

Thanks for both of your replies. It's a like for like replacement so it will be soldered copper the whole way through.. I was looking to charge around £15 an hour and I think on my own it will take me 3-4 days maximum at 10 hours a day. So roughly around £600. Sorry if I sound silly but does this sound about right as like I say have never had to do before. Thanks

I think your total is right but your calculation is wrong :)

Your total is right, because a guy with experience would probably do the work faster and it's not really fair on the client to charge extra because you're not yet as fast as he would be.

On the other hand, for smaller jobs, your hourly rate is too low, you should double it. That doesn't mean you'll get to charge that every time, as I said you don't want to charge your clients too much for your training...
