Help - I don't have any hot water, but the central heating works and I have hot water if I use the immersion. I know absolutely nothing about plumbing - any ideas what the problem could be?

too difficult to diagnose over the internet to be honest because we need to see what layout you have and unfortunately you probably dont know weather you have s w or y plan ? you need a heating engineer to look at it. check all of your system "dials" cylinder thermo on full ? programmer on the correct setting? if it is not something as simple as this then it is very much likely you need a new component such as a 2 port valve or cylinder thermostat. Have you changed anything in your system recently?

Thanks for quick response.
No, I haven't changed anything on the system recently. I've checked the thermostat - it's on full and the programmer is correct.

Well ,tell me what kind of boiler you have? if a combination boiler most cases the problem is diverter valve inside the boiler..If a system boiler ..a boiler heated the cylinder...with pump, zone valves etc..The problem is the 3 port valve or zone valve.. test them one by one..
1.Check all control
2.Check the deverted valve, Swich on the heating control then look if the deverter valve move , If will not move then the problem is the diverter valve..Dont drain the whole system al you need get a deverter valve head..or call your mate..if you what no money envolve..easy

Cheeers

Hi Fiona, Check that the small cistern that feeds the central heating system has water in it, it may be found in the roof space.(you will find a arm with a float attached give it a shake,) if water fills the cistern thats probably your problem, if it an open vented system. ~Good Luck

Help - Woman trying to do a man's job!!

Do not know what you mean, apart from looking after the TV remote control and leaving the wc seat up all other jobs in the home are down to you Women :D

It is probably the motorised valve or it could be the tank empty but think you may have to get someone in for this job.....
now were's that remote....:):p

:Dyup your right in that puddle.
also i advise call a plumber, female one if you can she can dust the loft out whils she's at it.:D

check the small tank in your loft (if you have one, the small tank that is) it should be above the boiler and be about the size of a hamster cage, if the waters low, less than half, check the float valve, long plastic or metal arm with a hollow plastic
float on the end of it, push it down and see if it comes back up ok. Water should come out on the downward stroke, if it doesnt it may be blocked. If you have to replace this its only cheap and a five minute job, just remember to play it safe and isolate the incomming water supply or there may be an isolation valve just before the pipe enters the tank/float valve.

Other than that check the motorised valves as suggested, if its a new motor you need these are cheap, about £13.00 and easy to fit you can order from any plumbcentre supply or screwfix etc, but if you do this yourself remember to isolate the electrical supply first.
