Hi, ive been a plumber/ maintenance engineer for a few years now and am fortunate with my work as I often work with gas engineers so puting a portfolio together for my gas quals should be easy...

However...

My company want me to make a portfolio of gas jobs and get them countersigned - BEFORE they pay for a course.
This is causing me problems coz altho most training places will accept a portfolio done before a course - no one will sort me out with any clear details on what is required in a 'portfolio'

I have probably about 40-50 service sheets that i filled in,in duplicate when working on a gas services over 2007/08 and had them signed by the gas engineer
but dont know if they count

ive started taking photos now when servicing and doing installs but so far have only done 1 service and fitted 1 gas water heater.

Can anyone help with details of whats required and the format, or any usefull links???
I just want to get a decent start on gathering evidence that will be valid

PLS HELP!

I was looking at doing a 4week domestic course and then a commercial changeover, prehaps adding LPG & Oil...

some of our lads had there portfolios or a portion of them disallowed due to the dates on them. i was told a maximum of 3 months before the start date of the course. after ringing around i discovered they vary between colleges.
all required photos and all required to be signed of by a registered engineer!

thanks Shaun
Was thinking photos would be needed (its not what i was told at first)
still not sure what i need photos of tho

holding analisers and u-gauges, tightening unions, lighting smoke pellets and scratching my chin i guess?...

they are particulaly interested in see a gas aplliances' data plate for some reason? and gas meters where you can clearly see the meter bar code.

so for 1 entry in your portfolio, they can identify the product your working on and through the gas meter obtain the m.p.r.n. and from that the address.

i dont know how many they actually check, but that way they can if they want!

speaking with bpec portfolios in mind, pics are not mandatory, however as a suggestion to candidates i have always said a good portfolio makes you stand out from the rest of the class, during the course everyone mucks in and gets along, but when qualified they are in direct competion with each other for every job that comes up so the better their portfolio might make them stand out a bit, so good pics and good info along with good presentation make a portfolio enjoyable to look at, it is all about balance, i get bored looking at 30 pics of the same boiler being serviced, but any IUP things make it interesting and also prove you have spotted it (as you took the pic) from my point of view as someone who has to review portfolios, MAKE SURE YOUR PORTFOLIO IS REAL, i hate to see a TT being done in a pic and the u gauge is almost lying on its side etc, it just makes it look crap
