Hi lads,

I've been plumbing for around 8-9 years now and have my NVQ level 2 & 3. I also passed my ACS Exams that include CEN1 & CCN1. I quit my job shortly after, after a dispute with employer. Haven't been on the gas safe register yet and am thinking of setting up on my own.

Anyway all my gas portfolio was done with my old employer.

Question 1. Will I be able to set up my own business and get on the gas safe register with my old portfolio.

Question 2. How much does it cost to get on the register?

Any advice is greatly appreciated - Cheers!

Question 3.With CEN1 am I allowed to service and repair boilers as well as fit them?

Kevin,
If you have got your CEN1 and CCN1, then you should not need your portfolio to get on the register.I got on the register back in April, and did not need to show my portfolio.

The cost for a first timer is about £400.
You will need to be on probation for three months, after which, you are inspected and accepted on the register fully, or advised of where you need to continue.

Thanks graham.

What does the inspection include if you don't mind me asking.
As i'll be going self employed will i have to drum up any specific jobs?

Basically it works like this:

You apply to GSR to become registered.
They relieve you of about£400.
You are then registered on a probationary basis, although you can still do any gas work within your scope.
The inspector will contact you close to when the 3 months is up,to book an inspection. He will ask you to arrange to go and visit any of the jobs you have done in the three months,or to arrange a current job,ie a service.
He will ask you to basically carry out a safety check at your chosen property/job.
He will then assess you whilst you are doing all your checks.
He will then ask you some questions about gas safety.Usually stuff like ventilation, checks to be made on an open flue etc.
Hope this helps.

Graham

ps back to your original question, yes you can service/repair boilers under the CEN1 scope.

Cheers graham thats great, doesn't sound too daunting. Thanks for the information!

Its not that scarey, they arent there to catch you out just making sure that you are safe to work on gas, basic stuff really, youl be reet!.
Have you given up on playing football then?.
