Hey guys, been flicking through this site for a while now its amazing. Im wayne 25 and from holsworthy in devon. i've wanted to be a plumber for years but due to taking loans out in my younger years haven't been able to afford to steer away from my current job at waitrose. They are almost paid off now so finally I can get my arse into gear and learn the plumbing trade. Ideally I would like to do an apprentaship but i remember trying a couple of years ago but absolutely no joy and im over 25 now. my plan is to do a flexible course with OLCI whilst working 4days at waitrose and try and get 1day a week doing work experience with a plumber. This is so I can still have an income to pay the 6k for the course and a safety net incase things go **** up and cant find work. one question on how the OLCI programme works as asking over the phone I felt he did not have clue which was worrying (I will be meeting the trainer before signing or paying anything). Do you do city and guilds 6189-11 then the nvq an additional course/test? or is it just one course/test and you get 2 qualifications from it. cheers wayne

Can you let us know when you hand in your notice at Waitrose? :)

I've always wanted to be on the fish counter at waitrose. Just saying.

oh welcome to the forum! It's full of doom and gloom! Have a look on the electrical forum, if I could retrain that's where I'd be!

1. take a look at all the plumbers already in the area looking for work, ex33/ ex34 mags. 2. why go to olci when Petroc do a perfectly good training course and can help with payments etc. Why chuck in a job with the best retailer in the uk, shareholder scheme, belief in promtion from within, good pension, normally nice people to work with. Must be the heat has addled his brain!!!!!!!!!!1

Waitrose isn't what I want to do for the rest of my days, yes the benefits are good but I feel my lifestyle will be much better in a different working environment. I will deffenatly keep a day or 2 there though. Im getting the general idea that there's not much work around? and im going to struggle when qualified? electrics don't really interest me as much also im worried it will be too hard for me.

Hi and welcome along Wayne, can somebody more knowledgeable than me answer the questions that guy asked? I`m pretty sure he will get the picture regarding his dream job in the real world by scrolling through old posts. When I said I wanted to be a car mechanic my old man got a friend of his to give it to me straight so I diverted to mechanical engineering instead.

"Hi you lucky people wth my dream job!"

You will get the reality check in a couple of years.

Once upon a time this was a decent way to make a half decent living even if it meant you were taking a few years off your life (oh yes they don't publicise that one in the papers).
Now it is a rat race to the bottom.

:rofl::rofl::77: are you mental,do you really think we are all minted, you need a reality check sunshine to many fish in to small a pond

There are ALOT of plumbers in our area... Can't you do something else ;) it's not exactly a dream job.

As said a course up petroc would be your best bet.... You would have to be pretty poor to fail

For you Wayne, it's a dream. For us doing the job it's a nightmare.

It's an urban myth that plumbers are rolling in money, another myth is that there's a shortage. Both are untrue.

And those perpetrating those myths? The training establishments who want to take your 6k, part train you, fill your head with half baked ideas then throw you on an ever-growing heap.

The very same happened with the IT industry back in the late 90's..

You'd be better off keeping your money under the mattress.

Dream job eh.
Try changing a hydroblock on a Saunier Duval Thema and you'll change your tune. Lol

The innocence of youth!

thanks for your input but I hadn't said anything about being "minted" im after a career in something I will enjoy and benefit from as a life skill. not for a dream of easy money. im a hard worker and like to EARN my money. I take on the point about petroc and im goin to try and make appointment to see what my options are. I don't want to shell out 6k if i can help it and don't feel it would suit my learning style but just felt it was my only option as hadn't really looked into petroc. i understand it wont be a walk in the park but i just want my working life to be more enjoyable for me as i still have 50 years to go!

Then go for it!! i still love doing this job, somewhere different most days, meeting new people & coming up against new problems .i couldn't bear to be stuck in the same place day in day out! Ok I have no job security & no holiday pay & no sick pay but I can come & go as I please.

If it's truly what you want to do then go for it. I'll be the first to shake your hand if you prove us wrong.

You are perfectly welcome to ask for help and advice on here!
