Hot & Cold Water Running In The Bath?

Hi,

Recently when i am running a bath the hot water comes out out only for a short period of time and after a few minutes the water goes really cold. I have to turn the tap off and on again for the hot water to come out and even then its only for like two or three minutes. Its almost like the hot water is losing pressure or something like that Any ideas what this could be?

This has been going on now for about a month plus. No we have not had any new taps installed and nothing new at all as far as the plumbing goes. It's also taking considerable longer for the water to go hot then it used to. The water comes out hot for about a 1 or 2 minutes and then it just goes cold again. Could it be losing pressure somewhere? We had a new boiler installed about 3 years ago.

Hi Bhavick i am assuming it is a combi boiler? it is possible that you are getting a poor flow for running your bath do you have a shower mixer attached and find that you get better pressure from this? unfortunatly from a combi you tend to get high pressure leading to a higher flow resistance on the hot the best bit of advice i can give you is to only run the hot water when filling a bath as running both taps with reduce the flow of water, i hope this helps

Is it off a combi boiler?

does it happen on any other hot taps? kitchen for example?

I have a Baxi Combi 105HE Boiler. No it does not happen anywhere else in my house only in my bathroom. Yes i do have a shower mixer.

Sounds like it could be the cartridge in the mixer valve

do you get good pressure from your shower mixer ( assuming that this running straight off your taps? if this is then there is no cartridge at all so do not get confused with this) but still have poor pressure from the taps also have you tried as i suggested by only running the hot tap for the bath?

Hi,

I have an electric shower mixer and also a shower that runs straight off the boiler. I mostly use the electric shower and that pressure is fine not sure about the shower that works of the boiler though never hardly use it. One thing i have noticed is when i have the hot water tap running on its own, and i open the tap only a little bit so the water is drizzling out i seem to get hot water for lot longer then if i just put it on full blast!

1) it could be an increase of your mains water pressure - you could phone the water board and find out if any changes have been made recently. Try either only turning the bath tap on half way, and see if this helps. You could also half close your stopcock on the mains for the house, and see if this helps too (report back though!)
Combi boilers can only cope with so much water pressure, if it is too high it will go cold or fluctuate . . .

2) Maybe a new tap could resolve the problem - it might be the old tap is a low pressure type, or is simply siezed up inside. Get a high pressure tap if you do (and check the other points before you do though!)
This MAY resolve the problem for you regardless, although it is best to check the other posibilities out first . . .
