Hi.

My hot water cylinder has developed a leak at the top which is going to mean a replacement. I have a cylinder in mind from screwfix that comes with fittings, I just have a few questions if anyone has the time.

1. Do I really need to fit an immersion heater? (I have an electric shower for washing should the gas go off and have never used the immersion in 15 years).

2. What things am I going to need to buy along with the cylinder? (other than a thermostat, possibly an immersion and a ton of ptfe tape).

3. Are the pipe fittings in the same place on each cylinder i.e. standard places?

Thanks in advance.

1: No

2: Depends on 3.

3: If it's a like for like eg same manufacturer etc then you may hit lucky. Don't count on it though!

It's handy being a plumber coz you tend to stock up on fittings etc or survey the exchange before doing the work.... Give yourself a day to do just in case you're running around somewhat!

Is the cylinder you're replacing direct, indirect or primatic?

Thanks for replying. It's indirect according to my wife's (too busy to do it) plumber cousin, 900x450. I read a review on screwfix and the guy said the cylinder came with all the fittings attached so here's hoping. I'm pretty central in Basingstoke with plumbcentre, screwfix and all the main diy shops within a mile should I need. I won't bother with the immersion if I don't need one. Thanks again.

I'll make sure the tank is there before I start to double check the positions of fittings etc.

As tamz says. you'll need a blank for the immersion boss.... Draining the existing cylinder can be fun especially if they're in the middle of the house upstairs! If you have a long enough hose pipe I'd suggest syphoning the cylinder, more guarantee of getting most of the water out!! Also sheet up all the way to outside if you can coz they're full of stuff you don't want to get on your carpet!!
